Harry BoydeD, a young negro
man, was placed in jail late Mon
day evenicig for stealing money
jrom his aged grandmother.
It is time to be getting your
Tstaiced glass ready for viewing
the eclipse of the sun on the
morning of May 28.
The first shipment of beans
irom this market went forward
Tuesday to the northern markets
and were consigned byMr, W. D.
Qreech.
Henry Powell, a bright mulat
to, was locked up in trie city jail
fojt the police Monday for using
$ knife nn Georgia Watson. She
was cut severely &nd some of the
wounds are of a serious nature
The newest thins; in town is the
handsome delivery wagon of Mr.
W. H. Barnes' Bakery. It is a
model of workmanship and was
turned out from the buggy manu
factory of Messrs. Allen Moore &
Co.
Mr. John Slaughter, of the
Goldsboro Undertaking Com
pany, has returned from Rich
mond, where he attended the
great Street Fair last week, and
also the lectures of Prof. Brenard
on the latest art of embalming.
Rev. J. E. Bristowe, now sta
tioned at Bethel, is in the city, to
the pleasure of his many friends
and the congregation of St. John,
of which he was pastor for four
consecutive years, and where he is
held in high esteem.
A negro named June Adams
was brought to Goldsboro from
Fremont on Tuesday and placed
in jail to await the coming term
of the Superior Court to answer
to the charges of carrying a con
cealed weapon and for drawing a
cistol on Messrs. T. R. and
F. H. Hooks.
Our young friend and towns
man cadet Tyson Dortch left
Tuesday for WestPoint, where he
was appointed in competition
with an unusually bright class.
The good wisn.es of his many
friends in this city, his home, go
with him and all hope for him the
success which his college career
augurs that he will accomplish.
The several companies of the
Goldsboro Fire Departments are
practicing regularly with a view
to entering the contest for prizes
at the annual tournament 10. Wil
mington this vear.The Wilming
ton people are taking advantage
of the occasion and are advertis
ing the event extensively. This
city is being billed with hand
some lithograph stringers which
shows the interest taken in the
occasion by the inhabitants of the
"City by the Sea."
And still Goldsboro talent wins
out. This time it is our young
friend Dr. Lyndon M. Humphrey,
who recently went before the
Board of Examiners of the State
Dental Association, and Mon
day received his license from that
body as a f uil-fUdged dental sur
geon. His career at the Balti
more College of Dental Surgery
has been une of marked distinc
tion, and his success before the
examining board of bis State is no
surprise to those who had watch
ed his course and are acquaint
ed with his ability. The Argus
congratulates him right heartily
and wishes him long life to enjoy
the distinction and success that
we feel sure awaits him in his
5hosen profession.
TBEY SAY.
The clever woman always laugns
at a man's jokes, even if she hag
heard them before.
It is ho loiiger a puzzle as to
who's got the button. Every
smartly gowned woman can solve
it.
It sometimes happens that a
man of resources is one "who has
ingenious methods of contracting
liabilities.
Every woman over thirty keeps
a few letters or things that are
not useful for anything only to
cry over.
WILL NOT BE THESE.
Philadelphia Times,
Visitors to the Democratic na
tional convention at Kansas City
in July will nrss the faces of eome
distinguished delegates who were
at Chicago in 1896. Young Gov
ernor Russell died within six wee'is
of his appearance on the rostrum
before the 12,000 applauding aud
itors assembled in the hall. John
R. Fellows, tbe most brilliant
platform orator of bi3 party, re
turned to New York to die. Those
who sat under his voice at that
remarkable meetinsr, spontaneous
ly called together at the Auditor
rium the night before Bryan's
nomination, will never forget the
superb effort by the District At
torney of New York, delivered
after very little preparation, but
it lasted two hours, and every
listener was eorry when Fellows
ceased talking.
The grave and wise countenance
of Ex-Gfroyernor Rogwell P Flower
wili not be found, as heretofore,
at an end seat among the New
York delegation. He had for com
panions at Chicago Ex&Secretary
Whitney and Congressman Sulzer.
Whitney will not go to Kansas
City. Governor 'Flower will be
missed, because his figure was
imposing and his personality dis
tinctive. He did not make
spaeches, but he was a good talker,
and when he had taken a position
was always ready to defend it, A
glass of ice water, on a hot day,
ended a career of unexampled suc
cess .
The man who came nearest to
Bryan in the race for the Chica
go nomination, Ex Congressman
Bland, father of the silver dollar
of to-day. has passed away. He
was not in the convention, but re
mained on his Missouri farm, con
fident that he would be chosen as
leader of the yan.The honor passed
him by, and he continued along
the even tenor of his way, appar
ently undisturbed, but really mor
tally hurt. His was one of the
first telegrams of congratulation
received by the new apostle of
silver. Bland never recovered
from the disappointment, and has
long 6ince gone over to the great
majority.
Already curiosity is rife as to
who will make the speech nomine
ating William Jennings Bryan at
Kansas City.
There have been very few great
spoeche?, made in placing Presi
dential candidates before national
conventions. No serious attempt
at oratory was made on such oc
casions until Robert G. Ingersoll
named Blaine in an eight-minute
address that made the Illinois or
ator known from one end of the
land to the otner. JNext came
Conkling's Appomattox speech
nominating General Grant.
In Democratic conventions,
Daniel Dougherty made two fa
mous speeches at Cincinnati and
St. Louis, in nominating Hancock
and Cleveland. But the two most
memorable events in the assem
blages of that party were the de
nunciation of Grover Cleveland
by Bourke Cockran at Chicago
and Bryan's wonderfully magnetic
outburst of language at the same
place, in 1896 nominating him
self. Millions Given Away.
It is certainly gratifying to the
public to know of one concern in
the land who are not afraid to be
generous to the needy and suffer
ing. The proprietors of Dr. King's
New Discovery for Consumption,
, uougns ana uoias, nave given
awY over ten million trial bottles j
of this great medicine aha have
the satisfaction of knowing it has
absolutely cared thousands of
hopeless cases. Asthma Bronchitis,
Hoarseness and all diseases of the
Throat, Chest and Lungs are sure
ly cured by it. Call on J. H. Hill
& Son, Druggists, and get a free
trial bottle. Regular size 50c. and

price refunded.
Girls always figure on what it
costs to get married just as though
there would probably never be
any more in the family.
KENTUCKY'S GOVERNOR.

States Supreme Court in the in
terest cof Beckham, Democrat,
affirming the decision of the Ken
tucky Court of Appeals. The

Chief Justice Fuller, and the
