THE.WOMAN'S CLUB. fSL ANY I TV TVT Mill QXeifcl Beport oi Ita Work and Its Purposes, Its Achieve ments and Its Hopes. The Goldsboro Woman's Club met Id regular session Thursday afternoon, Oct. 24th. Four new members were received. Reports from the different departments were adopted. The Mental Cul ture department reported the course of study beginning in Oc tober, "Men and the Cities of Icaly," Studies in the Poetry of Italy," "Imperial Germany," First Steps in Human Progress" with the required reading in the Chatauqua Magszlne, which is a continuation of its reading jour ney feature that has been so at tractive the past two years and now takes us through Italy and Central Europe, under the head of Formative Presidents in Am erican Diplomacy we have a sub ject for study of intense present interest to every American, also an article on "Italian Art and Artist." Miss Etta Spier reported the boxes were now ready to be placed in the postoffice and de pot. All who have magazines and papers to contribute are re quested to send them to Miss Spier's home. Members of tbe Club are again urged to attend the regular Club meetings, and join some department. A new stove has been purchased, an abundance of wood supplied and we are prepared to furnish com fort and sociability, instruction along the lies of department work, and cooperation with any honest effort made for the up lifting of humanity. No woman can afford to become so absorbed in the cares of home that she has not the inclination and real heart felt desire to help others, not so much for what she may give, but the broadening in fiuenca f united effort has upon her own character. Lt us recsl ognize this fact, the work can and will go on just the same, without us, but we. cannot do Without the work that the world gives us to do. Dorathea Dix, from -a poor school teacher, became Dorathea Dix the noted authoress and phil anthropist, because she heard the cry of the unfortunate and gave her life to change tnat cry into a note of jay. Louise Alcott began teaching school at eighteen was a govers ness and a seamstress. She b6 gan to write stories for children because she loved them. She gave to the world her best, and to-day the world gives back to her the allegiance of every boy and girl who has ever read "Lit tle Men and Little Women" and the gratitude of thousands of fathers and mothers for the in fluence cf these books upon their children. Elizabeth Barrett Browning brought the whole world to her sick bed with her cry - of the children, and other poems that welled up from her heart and touched the heart of the world because her love for humanity refused to be bound. And to day the world gives back to her the sweetest and tenderest praise, -while she during a life of almost constant suffering, received a crown of love and loyalty that made eyen pain sweet. There are hundreds of others we could mention who were con stant and true in thei" home re lationship and yet found time to bless humanity with tenderest ministry, and who, although they have been called to their eternal reward, the world will ever hon or and love as long as time shall last. The Travelling Library, under the leadership of Mrs. Sol Wei1, is doing good work. She request ed a committee be appointed by the-Club to assist her. Mrs. Sue HollowelJ, Miss Mary Borden and Miss Hattie Dewey were named as a committee for this service. It is the desire of foe chairman to enlarge this work and arouse the interest of An Excellent Combination, The pleasant method and beneficial effects of the well known remedy, Sybtjp of Fios, manufactured by the Califokkia Fig Syrup Co., illustrate the value of obtaining1 the liquid laxa tive principles cf plants known be medicinally laxative and presenting them in the form, most refreshing1 to the taste and acceptable to the system. We cannot all ba a Doratbea Dix, a Louisa Alcott or Elizabeth Browning, but whoever puts a good book n circulation has set in motion mm fluences that only eternity can reveal. They are in a sense a missionary, whose work is as good as humanity. The influence of the book a girl or a boy in stinctively hide3 whenever the parent approaches, is as pernio ious as the companions they are ashamed to be. seen in company with. Newspapers teem with ac counts of boy burglars, theives, embezzlers and some instances oi murders. Girls who run away from school to bo married, girls supposed to have been carefully reared in their homes, yet guilty of all kind3of indiscretions, these in most cases., come from the books they have read, The Rural Library is a step in the right di rection, but does not begin to sup ply the need. Thaobjsctof the Travelling Library is to put gccd books in every community in Wayne county, that will be ac cessable to all who desire to read them. Over one hundred new books are now ready to be sent out as soon as librarians can be secured to attend to them. The magszines and papers placed in tbe boxes at tbe postoffica and at waiting room at the depot are intended for any who may desire them. The books f-r the central part of tbe town will be kept at the club room. Miss Acnia Farrior will have charge of them and ap point one day of tha week when tbey will be g.iven out. WERN3AN, OF BALTIMORE, SAYS: Baltimore, Md., March 30, 1901. Gentlemen : Being entirely cured of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you a full history of my case, to be used at your discretion. About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my hearing in this ear entirely. I underwent a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any success, consulted a num ber of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that only an operation could help me, and even that only temporarily, that the head noises would then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever. I then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New Yoiik paper, and ordered your treat ment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased ear has been entirely restored. I thank you heartily and beg to remain Very truly vours, F. A. WERMAN, 730 S.
