When they begin to spread and eat into the flesh, sharp, piercing Sains are felt as the underlying tissue is estroyed and the tender nerves exposed. Cancerous sores develop from very trifling causes; a carbuncle or boil, swollen gland, a little watery blister on the tongue or lip, a wart, mole or bruise of some kind , . i m. r : Decomes an muoient, lesiermg suio, which in time degenerates into cancer. The high guesses that have of late been given currency came from middlemen and speculators and "experts." Those of the New York Cotton Exchange ranged from 9,500,000 bales to 11,150,- 000; tho-o of the New Orleans Cottcn Exchange average 10,788, 604; those of the Memphis Cotton Exchange showed an average of 10,560,417 bales; those of the Houston Cotton Exchange gave an average guess of 10,600,000 bale?. Expert Nei!l sent to Liverpool for foreign iise a guess th it topped . them all, namely, 11,250,000 S bales. The Department of Agri culture has taken the hot air and speculation out of alt such uesees by estimating the crop at 9,674, 000 bale. The estimates of tha Depart ment are no longer made on the basis of the yield of lint per acre. Various sources of information are now utilizad, and the esti mates are now received with con fidence, They have of late been approximately correct. The Da partment's estimate in December, 1899, was 9,500,000 bales, and the out turn was 9,426,000 bales. Last year its December estimate called for 10,100,000 bales, and the year's figures footed 10,383, 000 bales. The Department's estimate is a million bales below the average guess of eight cotton exchanges, and the belief among the people ia that it is very nearly correct. ' The Argus has all along ad vised the farmers to hold their cotton at eight cents as a mini mum price, and those who took its advice will, it is plain, have no reason to regret it. Those Southern mills who did not stock up will now have to pay higher prices.
