The Chicago Tribune comes forward as usual with an annual list of hangings and lynchings. Such lists serve a useful purposes for they show which way we are drifting. They are uncomplimen tary in many respects,' but it is always best to see and know the whole truth. The Tribune's statistics are correct, approxim ately, and no sectional bias has been permitted to warp or alter them. In the year just ended there "were 118 legal executions, or one less than occurred in the prev. aous year. Seventy-one of the victims of the law were negroes and forty-seven whites. Thirteen more negroes and thirteen fewer whites were hanged in 1901 than in 1900 a singular use of the number that superstition so free ly attacks. Eighty-two of the executions took place in the South and only thirtysix in the more populous North. This fact goes to show that the law is not altogether ignored in this sec tion of the country. Murder led to 107 of these executions, crimi nal assault to 10 and train rcb berj to 1 total 118. The lynchings of 1901 number 135, as against 115 in the prev ious year. All but 14 of the lynchings occurred in the South. The lynchings in the North were confined to California, Idaho, Montana, Kansas and Indiana. All of the lynched were negroes except 28-107 negroes, 26 whites, 1 Indian and 1 Chinaman. Thirty-nine were lynched on ac count of murder, 19 for criminal assault and 77 for a wide variety ot alleged offenses.
