Statistics just issued from Wash ington show that the imports of iron and steel during the fiscal year of 1904 will be only about one-half as large as they were iu the fiscal year 1903. Duriug the ten months ended with April last the imporls of iron and steel amounted to only $23,075,064, as compared with $43,332,714 in the same period of last year. On. the other hand, the exports of iron and steel during the current fiscal year j will show a material increase amounting to at least $10,000,000 more than in the fiscal year 1903. The explanation is simple. During the fiscal year of 1903, the price of American iron and steel was absor mally high, yet there was a brisk demand for all that could be produc ed in the United States, and more. Foreigners were thus enabled to pay the high tariff tax on imports of iron and steel, and yet sell their product in the United States at a profit. McGee, of Plant City, shot and seriously wounded F. Badger Wilder in an ice cream parlor at the corner of Frankliu and Lafayette streets in this city. Bad feeling had existed between the two men for several manths, caused by politics. McGee was in the p'af-e and Wilder entered and after a few words had passed struck him. McGee drew a pistol and fired, the ball passing en tirely through Wilder's body. Wilder is badly wounded and the chances are against his recovery. Bjth men are prominent and highly respected.
