The children in the public schools of Chicago inaugurated a sympathetic strike that was novel to say thejeast. 1?heir sympathiel warmly ran with the teamsters and garment -workers and so they decided to strike against somebody and their teachers were & their only bosses in sight n - They ctrald not be punished at all ifChicago did not have a compul sory education law. Under that law it becomes the duty of parents to keep their children at school, if they do not they may be assessed and fined and this i3 what the board to education is engaged in doing. It has caused the arraignment of numer ous parents and the parents of six children have already been fined each twenty dollars and costy. More are to be fined. It is very natural on the part of children to sympathize with their parents but Chicago's board of educa tion does propose, it is plain, to encourage or permit school strikes. Strikes on the part of adults are quite enough and children should De tola to stand DacK when a loDor movement is to be fought out. REPORT OF ACREAGE. The first report of the Department of Agriculture on the cotton acreage of growth will be due June 2 and it is awaited with considerable inter est Over the preparation of the forth coming report friction has arisen, and the parties to the friction are John Hyde, chief of the bureau of the Department of Agriculture, and Harvie Jordan president of the cotton association. Mr. Jordan desired to furnish the reports on acreage for the use of Mr. Hyde, but Mr. Hyde declined the proposition because Mr, Jordan's reports are not to be consol idated until May 30 or only three days before the day set for the pub' lication of the Agricultural Depart ment's reports. But the friction relates to Mr. Jor dan's mental attitude rather than to any question of time. Mr. Jordan assumes to begin with that the acre age in cotton ha3 been materially re duced and he desires Mr. Hyde to secure infomation based on that as sumption Mr. Hyde refuses to rcog nize Mr. Jordan or his assumption He is gathering information indepen dent ut any pre-conceived notions He even lectures Mr. Jordan and his associates accusing them of per- judging the situation. Mr.Hyde says no injusticce will be done in his report of June2, because 60 percent of the reports thus consolidated will come from cotton farmers' and he feels sure they are not bears in a market sense, of that word. He ventures the assertion that whatever error is made in the report of June 2 will, as: usual, be one favorable to the farmers." HOWLING DINGLEYITES. The Dingley tariff, which is so con structed that it creates a heavy treas ury deficit while it milks home con sumers unmercifully, is on trial, and the moving party at present is Secre tary Taft and the Panama canal com mission. They say they cannot build the canal except at high figures if they are to be placed at the mercy of.Dingleyism, and they have there fore wisely decided to seek ships and supplies in thenarkets of the world. This breach of the Chinese tariff wall by the republican administration is raising "a howl of protest" among those patriotic individuals who are standing pat on the sacred Dingley " tariff. Their patriotism is confined, however, to the filling of their own ockets. Patriot Grosvenor is dis tressed by the administration's atti tude, and no doubt Patriot Aldrich will be equally distressed as soon as he arrives in port. The gray woives of the Senate will howl as they never howled before. They may howl, but they cannot refute Secretar Taft's statements. General Grosvenor does, in fact, ad mit the truth of them. He admits that high prices within the wall is the basis of Diugleyism. He even asserts that consumers have been bled by the beneficiaries of the tariff so long they have become accustomed to it, and really like it. Secretary Taft is not one of that sort, however. He does not like Dingleyized prices, and he does not propose to let Uncle Sam pay them when he builds a canal. IS YD ALES LIVER TABLETS. Rydales Liver Tablets, cure all liver troubles. The President no doubt considers rate regulation the leadiug issue, but Congress may differ from hi:u, for Congress once in session can consider any subject whatsoever. The Presi dent has no power to designate what bills it shall consider, unless indeed his political power be sufficient to control the members of the two houses. The treasury dt ficit and . the Pan ama tariff policy of the administra tion will almost necessarily come up, nd bth mean tariff revision. Close observers now concede that tariff re vision has, after a spell of Dingley ism nine years long, become inevit able. The deficit on June 3d will no doubt be $35. 000, 00 J, against Secre tary Shaw's estimate of $18,000,000. So heavy a deficit calls for a remedy, and a remedy involves tariff revis ion.
