The Latest Telegraphic News ol the Day Boiled Down to a Focus For Busy Readers. It does seem utterly unfair to re quire the President of the united btates to pay duty of twice as much as the articles themselves are worth on a lot of souvenirs thrust upon his daughter as a compliment to the high office of President 01 the United States. While Presideut Roosevelt is on one of hid tours it was suspected that the Kaiser would gel mixed up in an automobile mishap or do some thing or other to keep the public from forgetting that be is no small potato in the strenuous line him self. There is no reason why Iowa's decrease oi population should create comment. People wuo nave been to Iowa understand that it is easy for a man to make up nis mi ad to leave there if he has a hail-way invitation to go any wnere ela. President Roosevelt told the students of Trinity college, at Dut ham, a prufouad irLli vvhn he said: ''Ramejibjr thju your having gone through college uots not so inuca comer a spejidi privilege, a& it imposes a special obligation, on you." President Roosevelt is having every opportunity to appreciate Southern hospitality, lie is begin ning to know the Southern people better, and they, to know him better, and both are desirable It is said that Hon. Ch-tuutey Depew is getting serious. Has auy body heard of any select fall stlefe of jokes irom him since his conuec lion with the life insurance business was aired? They are beginning to have eonv more warm politics in New York, and the bi life insurance companies are in hopes this will induce tae pub lic to "forget if for a while. . If Philadelphia will wake up suffi ciently to cbasa out its army ol gratters the puolie will be wihing to stop charging that cuy with bjing last asleep. New Orleans would give the Hon orable Jack Frost as hearty a recep tion as if he ware the President of the United States. Mr. McCurdy decides he will stick to his job, and the policyholder gets stuck as one of the results of the decision. In the September Arena Dr. Agnes Valentine Kelly makes an appeal to Northern friends to contribute to the causa of education among the poorer classes of the South, and says comparatively few people in the North know of the comparative help!essnessof.many of the Southern states as a result of the Civil war. Dr. Kelly adds: "The people of many of these commonwealths, notably Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, are poor. The states are poor, ine governments are not in a condition as yet to furnish pop ular education for their people, es pecially in the rural and outlying districts. I think it is safe to say that no people in the confines of our 1 PRE81HF8 TOUR I HE IS RECEIVING A GREAT OVATION IN THE SOUTH. These states are potential ly rich, but they are paralyzed, and until tiiey are iu a position to give good school facilities to industrious, enterprisiug, lionae-buuaing people the tide of uew life that should be pnurLig into their borders will pass toother common wealths." It will doubtless be many years vet bjfore a good many people in the North and E-t fully realize that while the South wa- once poor, as the result primarily of .the wide spread doioUtioa wrought by the Civil war aod the period of recon struction, the South is to-day rich aod growing richer. Of the total exports of the country last year 41 per cant came from the recognition of their acclaims as he drove through the densely lined streets of the Capital, with Mrs. Roosevelt by his side and Lieut. Governor Winston seated with him, preceded, surrounded and followed by a pageant of the State's marshal, d manhood, military and State officials such as Raleigh has never seen before. And throughout that vast ocean oi humanity, representative oi our State's best citizenry, from every sec tion and neighborhood of our great Commonwealth, the spirit of Ameri canism predominated, anl with prideful, congenial unity they maoe the President feel that it was gooo, indeed, to be the guest of North Carolina and, that he ' was safe and welcome in the midst of her so pa triotic and so noble people. This 23rd of October, 1905. D. B. PENNINGTON, Adminstrator. the North or West. It has come to be a habit among many misinformed people of tne North to speak of the South &s ground down in poverty. The South is amply able to educate its own children. All that is needed is to arouse public sentiment in the South to the value of education as a factor in the creation of high citizenship. - Thisthing.of depending on othero to do for ua what we can do ourselves is not only unwise but harmful as well. The whole ome influence of self reliance must not be underestimated. The value of local pride, of the consciousness of having performed our duty must be kept in mind. The interest which self-help simulates in a great cause ehou'd not be lost sight of. This lesson is rapidly bsing learned by the Southern' people. .
