Chicag is endeavoring to loosen Mutual Reserve Life Loses The Case. Washington, D. C, Dec. 18 The United States Supreme Court de cided toi'ay a case of great import ance, which, although it came from New York, affects many North Carolinians and will result in the payment of $115,000 to policy hold ers of the Mutual Reserve Life In surance Company in Betufort, Crav en, Pamlico and other eastern coun ties. There are policy holders in this company all over the State, a number being in Raleigh, and al ready similar action is being insti tuted by many of the to. The litigation was instituted five years ago and has been fought through all the State courts of Norh Carolina and New York. Senator Simmons, A. D. Ward and W. W. Clark represented the North Caro lina litigants, ot whom there are some forty. The Mutual Reserve, imposed what is declared excessive and unlawful assessments and de clined to accept the amount the North Carolina policy holders de clared to be due, cancelling the policies. Suits were instituted in these cases for full amounts paid in with interest from date of each payment. All the North Carolina courts held with the policy holders, though the company claimed that it was not doing business in the State, having abandoned the field. Finding no property held by the Mutual in the State, suit was brought ' in the New York State courts, and ! the decision of the North ' Carolina Supreme Court was sustained, which I in effect was that the mutual wascol- lecting premiums in North Carolina, and therefore doing business in the State. - . Religion ol the Right Sort. Marshville Home. A few weeks ago the editor of this paper received a ehee iu payment of an account whiuh was about six years old. The young man who owed it has since entered the miuiatry and m his letter he stated that that set- tied the last of his old accounts. t A religion that will make a man - pay his debts is a mighty good kind of religion, and we don't believe a re ligionthat won't make a man pay his debts, if he caa, will possiblv save him ironi eternal damnation after he shuffle off this earth and has to face the judgment bar. We don't believe a dead beat has any idea of what genuine religion is, except what he has heatd people say about it. Real Estate Transfers. Mr. H. E. Saott, of Kingstree. S. C, has purchased Mr. Geo. R. Stith's home on Oak St., and will move his family hero to get the benefit of our splendid Graded Schools. Mr. Ed. Davis, the hustling Wal nut street merchant, has purchased Mr. Geo.Southerland's corner lot on Mulberry and George streets. Mr. ii. a. JrarKer, jr., nas pur chased 6 dwellings of Mrs. Leatzow of Washington, D. C. Mr. Frank Latham has purchased part of the Patrick plantation. Mr. J. H. Lewis has purchased 4 dwellings, E. E. Smith property, on West Centie street. All these sales were made by the real estate hustler Mr. Ed L. Ed mundson, who has also sold the Cog dell property, comer East Centre and Vice streets, and made several other recent deals, aggregating $18,675 00. There has never been a itirne, in the history of Goldsboro, whenj her real estate was as valuable as now and her people so prosperous. Let'US continue to "go forward." the grip of New York upon the trade of the southeast. To some extent Chicago supplies the southeast with articles of foot!, aud its merchants and manufacturers can not see why they should net sell ribbons in the southeast as readily as side meats, drugs a3 well as Indian co:n, jewelry as well as compound lard. Competition is the life of trade. and no one will o jct to a great deal of it between Chicago and New York in the southeast. The Chicago Com mercial association i3 endeavoring to supply this section with a great deal of it. It is i aviting the entire southeast to go to Chicago to trade. and lit is employing every possible means to make the invitation ac ceptable. In the long run the south'ast will not have to look to cities a thousand mile3 away for goods, but the com mercial millenium is not yet fully due. At present some goods must be purchased elsewhere, and it is per haps a good plan to divide pur chases bet we: n ths two rival trade ; Hi cities. This would put both on their ! mettle. This would keep freight rates within reasonable bounds. i Up to a recent period New York , has outclassed Chicago in the south-! east, but the readj ustment of freight rates is leading to an evener divis ion of business. At present the efforts of Chicago to attract trade are lending to results, and no doubt the twocides will each share in about equal proportions the trade that can not be met and satisfied at home. atgams JOB" il C II jjj 3 j i p : j jli - r" -i Matgain Smkms, A- 4 N- G- Ki R.
