GOLDSBORO, N. C. April 23, 1908. THE NATIONAL C0PFNTI8NS. In about eight weeks the Republicans will meet at Chicago, and in about twelve weeks the Democrats will assem ble at Denver. Just about 550 delegates out of the 980 delegates thet will answer the roll call at Chicago have been elected, and the war secretary has secured a pro portion of the selected delegates that renders his nomination beyond reason able question. Last week he bagged 24 delegates in Minnesota, and he is rapidly becoming an easy winner. There are, it is true, many contests, but Taft promises to carry a majority of the Northern delegates, and the con tests will melt away under the glare of his heary vote outside of the favorite son States. He has nearly all of the delegates elected in the non-son States. He is to be the Republican nominee. Minnesota will send to Denver John son delegates and little Delaware will send Uray delegates, despite the pro tests of Judge Gray hi in sell. It is pretty neajiy just th say that the Nebraskan will Lave the support of all the dele gates. When New York votes asaunit she will support Bryan; so will Penn sylvania; so will New England. It is Idle to talk or to anticipate otherwise. It is to be Bryan versus Tait in No vember, and Wdl Street will be found lined up at that time against the honest producers of the country. But, because Wall Street won in 1896, 1900 and 1904, it does not I y any means follow that it can buy another election in 1908. It bought a go'.d brick in 1904, and there may be some of the trusts and mag nates who will not put their money on Taft this year. GOING AND CCM1NG. Exports in March last were about f20,000,000 less than they werein Marc!, of last year, and the exports of April will also be less than they were om year ago, J.ut imports are als decreas ing, and in March theinvisible balance of trade in our favor was $52, 000, 000. There will be in the nresen month a like balance, forimports are decreasing as well as exports. But, despite these balances on paper, gold is going out and no one knows how much will go out, or why it goes out. Itseems to be going because Paris bankers want gold and mouev is aceu -raulating in New Tork. Not in ten years have the bankc in New Yorjc held so much money, their surplus re serve standing on Saturday last at $53, 256,000. The congestion ol money in New York leads to low rates lor call money and this in turn leads on to gold exports. Secretary Cortelyou proposes, it Is reported, to reduce the money con gestion by calling in $50,000,000 or thereabouts now deposited in national banks in New York. The remedy is unobjectionable, and if it would pre vent gold exports it would be coui- mended by the country at large. But, why gold should go out, when in -even these dull months, we are selling to the outside world about $50,000,000 ixnore a month than we buy from it, ie lmply something that defies definite analysis and statements. pan no longer deceite. ii lit m ;3s, E33a ESS m flSr,!
