The Half-way House is 13, 000,000 Bales. Tho crop grown last year was a trifle over 11,000,000 bales, and on November 14 two thirds ot it had been ginned. Up to November 1 of this year 530 83 bales hd "been ginned and f the two-third rule is to bo applied a crop , approaching 14,500,000 bales would be tho outcome of thecrop. year. ' But no one anticipates a crop of that size simply because dry, sunny weather bad advanced tho. picking in an un usual degree. More than 96 per cent of tho crop had been harvested on Nov ember 14; Tbe percentage ginned up to that data may constitute a new re cord. Estimates of this year's crop still cover a wide : range.. Some say the crop will be less than 12,000,00t bales, while others say it will exceed 14,000, 000. G., Captain S. Cohen, Commanding, had one of their charac teristically enthusiastic turn-outs yes terday. The occasion was their annual Thanksgiving Target Fraotice, which was the most successful in every way the company has ever held. Notwith standing the adverse weather condi tions tho scores were far above the average and the competition was a keen one in every respect. Tbe high est score was made by Captain Cohen, who, however, did not compete for the prizes. Tho prizes, 'live in "number, ranging trom the first prize, a .25-lb turkey to a 10-pounder, were won as follows: 1st prize 1st Sergt. G. C Derr, score 24. , . 2nd prize: Sergt. S..E. Molone, score 25. 3rd prize: Serft.G. I. Pitt man, score 4th prize: Lt. E. A. Simpkins, score 22. 5th prize: Private W.S.Dewey, seore 21. A booby prize was awarded the low est shot. Private Arthur Outlaw, with a score of 7 winning the goose. On the return of the company to the armory an informal smoker was held, at which were also present a number ot friends and contributing members of the company. The company has a fintv range just on the outskirts ot .the city and the boys are all enthusiastic riflemen. Every one wants prosperity and prospeiity wo are almost sure to LAMPHEBE GUILTY OF ARSON Man Charged With Murder of Mrs. Gunness and Her Three Children Receives an Indeterminate Sentence From Court. Laporte, Iud., Nov. 27. Ray Lamp here, charged withjarson and the mur der of Mrs. Belle Gunness and her three children by setting fire to the Gunness house on April 29th, was found guilty of arson by the jury which had had the case under consideration for 24 hours. Within five minutes after the verdict was reported Judge Ricbter sentenced the defendant to the State penitentiary at Miohigan City tor an indeterminate term of from 2 to 21 years. He will bo taken to Michigan City to-morrow to begin his sentence. Attorney Worden, for the defense, said that a motion tor a new trial would be made and should it be re futed , an appeal to the Indiana Su preme Court would follow. Mr. Word- en declared the verdict to bo ridicu lous. "If he was guilty at all," said he, "he was guilty of murder. , He should have been acquitted." The motion lor a now trial will be based on tbe court's instruction telling the Jurors that they could find Lamp here guilty of arson under the indict ment Should the verdict be reversed in any way. the State will likely try Lamphere on one ot the other indict ments against him. ; It was learned but for two jurors Lamphere would have found guilty of murder or manslaughter, the verdict being a compromise. Several mem bers of the jury, it is said, held out long tor murderj in the first degree, with a life sentence. So far as could be learn ed, none was for hanging.
