' 4* THE BATTLE OF ALAMANCE. —Enough is known to assume a grand success on the 29th of this iu nth, upon fclfb occa sion of erecting a monument t>i com-- 1 mcmoration of the battle of Alamance. The people are aroused, and will certain* ly make the occasion worthy of the event celebrated. Quite a number- of the prominent speakers invited have re» sponded, saying they would be -present. An immense crowd will bo in attendance, should there be nothing to prevent. A WASHING MACHINK THAT IS NOT A HUMBUG. —(Jump Brothers, the owners of Iho exclusive right of territory for North Uatolina to sell '-Curtis's Active Washer" have nude their headquaHors here, and will remain for Borne three months. They Imve taken ont peddlersT license, and will visit every tamiTy in the county, aiul show the workings of thjir machine. Their purpose is to sell it oil its own merits; and those who' tail .to discover its practical utility after seeing it work will not be bored with importu nities to buy . All thev ask is to show what their machine will do, and then people may buy or not, as they cousider will best serve their interest. tf Favorable responses have been re* ceived from tue following gentlemen who were chosen to make speeches on the battle field of Alamance the 29th inst.: Judge Ilobt. P. Dick, Col. T. M. Holt, Hon. John Manuing, Judge D. G. Fowl, Hon. JT. P. Battle, and Hon. Henry K. Nash. Mr. Nash writes: **♦««! r e» gret to say that my vision is BO much impaired that it is utterly out of my { power to prepare an address, or to read it if ifc ware prepared. I hope however, to be with you on the yccasion and j>in with you otherwise Jn celebrating the anniversary of this interesting event." i D. A. LONG, I GONE. —Some ten years ago Mr. W, W. j Davison, a worthy Pennsylvania fanner, , bought the plauta'ion ot W. H. Mooro, j near tho depot, aud, with his family. be came u citizen ot our county. Some four or five years ago bo returned to his old home in Erie c >ni»ty, Pa., leaving Ms youngest eon, Floyd, who in the mean- j time Sad grown up and married here, in onarge of the farm. We are sorry that he too has lctt us and returned to Penti'-, gylvania. As was natural ho wished to be with his father aud mother, and brok ers and sisters and friends in the home of his childhood. .. Ho had many friends here, (in truth everybody liked Floyd) who weresorry to iee Him go. The well wishes of the community accompany him. ( Tito above was inadvertantly left out of the lust issue.) WK WON Mia CIGARS. —We did it this way: J. W. Harden, just West of the Court House mind you, has u full stock of farunng implements to sell, as well as being agent for some two or three makes of threshers and grain drills. So, like a sensible man, he concluded be would tell the public about it, in a sepa rate advertisement in THE GLEANER, and accordingly handed in his ad. last Mon» day. When the paper came out, he looked at it hastily and didn't see his ad., so concluded it had been lett out. He was just a little riled at it, aud asked ns why it was not put iu. We told him it was, and he bet as cigars it waa not. Well, we won the cigars, but if yon will read his ad., yon will know where to get pretty much every itnplemeut, a farmer need*, and that is worth more than any number of smokes. TEMPTATION—FOW people in this world sre proot against teinptaticu. They con aider themselves strong, until bronght within the influence ot temptation, and then their boasted strength succumbs to weak desire, aud they are lead captive, not only without a struggle, but wiUlugS ly. Tlio wisest oourse is to contesn our weakness by avoiding temptation. Now, if any lady has resolved that she will not buy "another thing" this season, we ad vise her, to stay away, from Ho t. Krwiu & Holts at Company Shops; lor as surely as sliu goe« there, and has spread out l»eo fore her, the dress goods, the hats and bonnets, the notions, the hosiery, the slippers aud shoes, in their tempting ar ray ot beauty, she will break her resolu> lion; and console herself by cousiderinK of the many things" to be bought with so little money. We were up there Saturday and watched somo ladies a« they struggled against the fascination, but as well might the charmed bird have attempted escape from the deadly capiN vation of the serpents eye. Tlioy surrendered completely, and we watched t hem buy hats, and dresses ami wc don't know what all. In this respert st least men are not superior to the la dies. They can no more staud the sight of nice, cheap goods, in their line, than can their wives, daughters and sweet leirts. IKe watehed jnst eleven speci mens ot the stronger sex in tlie presence of the stock of resdy made clothing at Holt, Erwiu & llolt's, and the last one of Ihe eleven went out with a new soil, !n --side ol two hours. So again we say, un less you expect to bny, you had better not go within the cnarmed circle. It i* death to resolutions of econoinv. But it von will go, you will find polite ttu:i, aud lots ol good* to selcot from. (IOIINTV COtIIHSIIONEKK, On the first Monday mouth every member of the Board was present. Steps have been taken by the authorities of the city ol San Francisco to remove the notorious Kalloch from bis office of Mayor of the city. The proper judicial proceedings are to be instituted to that end. The charge is that the Mayor by Li* words an I acta has counseled and encouraged a disregard of law and a spirit of riot, tu . mult and violence. He was elected by the Keai ueyites, and now that bin chitl, Dennis Kearney, is iu the penitentiary, the people seem to have come to a sense of their danger and duty, and a determi nation to rid themaelveajof these selfish agitators. It is said Dennis Kearney made $60,000 by his pretended sympathy for (he laboring classes. Mr. A. L. Watson of Lexington went to Charlotte with the Greensboro Sun day School excursion, last Friday, and stopifflj at the Charlotte Hotel. He dropped from bis chair in tbo dining room and died in few minutes. Ho was upwards of li fly years of age, ai.d a man of respectability and standing, though given to urink occasionally. He had been drinking tbe day of his death. We learn I rom the Charlotte Observer. a ■.osanu joke, A prominent physician of Pittsburgh' said jokingly to a lady patient who was complain ing ot Iter continued ill health and of his ins bility to care her, "try Hop Bitter*!" The lady took it in earnest and used the Hitters from which she wb'ained permanent health. She u>w laughs st the doctor for his joke, but he is not so well pleased with it. as it cost him s good patient. —Hahrisbubo Patsiot.
