Peonle geiierally, and e en those who may be termed steady readers and close observers, have but faint con coDtion of the maenitude and influence the press of this country has attained. From a careful examination oi tne au vance- pages of 1885 edidon of the Amebic an -Newspaper Directory, issued MaVvlst. bv Geo.- P. Rowell A Co., of New York, it appears that th-re are 14,147 newspapers ana -perioaicais oublished in the United-States and Canada; of these the United States has 12,973, an average of ona paper for ev ery 3,807 pers-ous. In 1884 the total number of neWsjiaper was less' by 823 than at present, ami wnue tne gain this year is not co marked as in some previous years, it is still considerable. Kansas shows the greatest ' increase, tho number being 78, while Illinois fol lows with a train or 77. It is curious to notice that New York, the sceim of so much political activity during the last campaign, should have only about one third as many new papers as the State of Pennsylvania. As an index to the comparative growth and prosperity of diflerrt sections or the . country, es pecially the Territories, the number of new papers form an interesting study, and may well occupy the attention of the curious. - . v 81,000 ! Shotwell was elected State Librarian and he will entei upon the discbarge of his duties on the first of June. Capt. Shotwell's appointment will give great satisfaction to a very large num ber or the people of North Carolina who appreciate-bis many excellencies of character . and who have a very warm spot in their' hearts for him. The duties of Librarian are light and we take it thitt the appointment will in no wise interfere with Cant. Shotwell's journalistic business, but will rather be or assistance to him and will enable him to make the Farmer and Mechanic more valuable o bis subscribers. On Capt. Shotwell's account we wish that the compensation was larger. Aetc Obterter. ; . tormm mm Miwl. .
