The writer often wonders if eastern North Carolina is aware yet that the completion of the most important canal cutting of the great inland waterway, that near Beaufort, is so near completion Talking one day this week with a venerable oitizen of Beaufort, he was asked this question, and re plied that he was sure the people there did not yet fully realize the meaning of it all. Such is the progress of the cut ling of the waterway across the neck of land between Adams creek and Core creek that thoVUnitcd suites engineer officer in charge, Oupt. Earl I. Brown, now feels justified in informing the writer that by next June the canal will be ready for traffic, unless some The storm in Texas last week was at first thought not to have been very destructive. This impression came out owing to the small damage thing not now foreseen happens at Galveston. It is found, however, I There has been delays and one of in the summing up that there were these is due to the presence of almost an hundred fatalities, and enormous stumps of cypress trees that the loss of property runs into away down under the water and j the millions. The head-line gives not tho work as it now looks on this - the , remotest idea of the subject canal, the largest undertaking in ' matter of the article; and we are many years in this part of the thus calling attention to it for the world. The' canal is 90 feet wide reason that the head-line under anil there will be 12 feet of water which it appears gives no intima- in it, and coastwise vessels of all tion of its contents, and for the fur- kinds will, within a year, be using uer reason that it contains very in- is a smaller boats in the United States navy, such as torpedo boats, de stroyers, etc. , will use it regularly, and in fact it means a great deal so far as the defense of North Car olina is concerned, apart from its high economical value not only to this State but to tho entire Atlan tic seaboard. It must be borne in mind that there were four miles of forest to! be felled; such a forest as has never been seen except in pictures by up-country folks ; with axe-men busy cutting and trimming, and with steam skidders snatching the timber into the woods" right and left, thus leaving the canal right of-way, 100 feet wide, absolutely clear, except for the stumps, which are attacked when the great machines come along which do the cutting. The ground is as black as ink, and rich beyond descrip tion. In the dim distance, look ing southward, is the lofty mast of the wireless station at Beaufort and looking northward, through the haze, can be seen the big dredges sucking and cutting their way. Before the civil war, Beaufort was a place with a srood trade. much of it with the West Indies, and it was quite a port during and directly after the civil war. It is going to be important again, though its people as already stat ed, have not awaked to this fact. There will be a fort, and a strong one, too, to replace the abandon ed old Fort Macon, at this south ern or Beaufort end of the water way. Away up in Massachusetts a canal which is to form a part of this same great system of inland waterway, is being cut through Cape Cod. There will be, when (the cold weather comes, a proces sion of yachts and other pleasure vessels passing southward through this new waterway, these mingling with the humbler and less ornate merchant vessels, including steam ers, schooners, canal boats, tank ers, barges, etc., these coming from all parts of the country, and this waterway will mean a great deal to the trade of North Caro SALE ,0F LAND -FOR TAXES.
