C, as second class matter Washington Letter. GRAHAM, N. C, Feb. 3 1910. The high cost of living is causing some fright in uovernment circles. It is well. An investigation is to be made, but will that cheapen it? Our opinion is that the investigation is feared from that quarter, also; lest it prove itself a boomerang that will rather damage than help Re publican pospects. It is stated that Congressman John Motlev Morehead declares that he will not allow his name to be used in the next Republican Congressional Con vention, or words to that effect. It may be that he sees the handwrit ing on the wall, and he is wise enough to stay out of the trap. Congressman R. N. Page predicts that no Republican will be elected to Congress from North Carolina this year. Politics and the Politicians. It May Be Pneumonia Washington, Feb. 2, 1909. Congress lias at last awakened to the folly and extravagance of at least one of its "junkets" and it is possible that in the investi gation and scandal in which a number of Senators and Members will have their reputations pretty badly marred, enougli". public in dignation may bo aroused to put an en U to tins silly waste ot pub lic funds. The public iHUerliars not awaro that it is a part of the business of every session of Con gress to provide for a half dozen more or less of these junketing parties and to appropriate the money for them. A few Senators and Representatives get together and decide that something needs investigating. They are careful that the something shall be in some interesting part of the world with a good climate for the season selected and that the party shall be provided with plenty of money for a trip taken in the most lux urious manner. If it is to be in the United States private cars with refrigerators and packed with the best of every thing to eat and drink are pro vided. To put the matter under the guise of "investiga tions" with each man empowered to elect himself to the iunkwt, which best suits the taste of his family is a clumsy attempt to de ceive the ultimate tax payer.
