Congress has adjourned for the holidays and is devoting itself in a versatile way, according to in dividual tastes, to the enjoyment of Christmas festivities. An un usually large contingent will re main in Washington. This was not the way in days of yore, when free railroad passes or bribes were as thick as leaves in velambrosa. Now let the various constituencies of our ninety-million nation send members to Congress rn tainted with other insiduous bribery, and we will have still other reforms and be farther from the decline and fall which histc says is inherent r" nati The Cuban situation is exciting much interest in political and official life. President Taft stopped in Cuba on his recent return from Panama. He talked with representatives of both factions. The President of Cuba, it seens, wants to perpetuate his presidency by reelection. A most unusual event is the en campment of several hundred Gyp sies in Anson county near Wades- boro. There are two tribes or bands and tbev are at outs. The chiefs have had a clash and riot and crime have resulted. Chief Mitchell, who claims ownership of both per son and property, was landed in jail Tuesday for criminally assaulting one of the women of the other clan. Bat the situation is .very much like that, of England with reference to Germany. A great German strategist is quoted as saying that he had planned half a dozen campaigns for landing two or three hundred thousand troops in England, but had never been able to work out a -plan for getting them safely out. It is only a day or a night from a German to. an English port, while from a Japanese to an American port is fifteen days. I terprise, Ala., was shot and killed Six Hundred Men Near Hew Uberla.1., Are Engaged In a Great Hunt. (Chicago Breniof Poat.) In the country round about New Iberia, La., 600 men are engaged in the work of wolf killing. Ter rible tales of the devastation caus ed bv the Louisiana wolves aid ef coming out of Sugar land. It is said, with due solemnity, that there are at least 0,000 wolves in one section of the state of no great territorial extent. The man who sees wolves generally sees someth ing more than double, but with all due allowance for the tendency to "yarn it" when talk ing of wild animals, there un questionably are plenty of wolves left in Louisiana. The wolf is more hated than ai other animal known to nature o - cept perhaps the rattlesnake and the Gila monster, and this is straugnr, because the wolf ts the near kfu to the dog, the best beloved of animals. Undoubtedly the wolf was the progenitor of all the domesticated does. There is no more character resemblance, however, between Old Tray, "ever faithful," and the timber wolf than there is between r ater moccasbi and a canary bird, butvhe wolf and the watchdog nevertheless are cousins, not many degrees removed. Take a wolf alone and he is as cowardly as some of his dog relatives are courageous. Hungry and hunting in packs, the wolf is a devil. Under certain conditions in the wilderness districts wolves are more feared than are the man-eating tigers by the defense less natives of India. As a subject of study wolves have an interest second to no beast of prey. One naturalist has called them a fascinating study, and doubtless be s right. 1 Probably no one will weep if the New Iberian hunters round up and kill the whole family of Louisiana wolves, but there is always something of regret in the passing of the wild animals, even inougu they are a menace to property and to human life. The settlers in a forested country first mako war on- the . wolves, The hand of man is against them everywhere, but the tribe still survives and will continue to sur vive in places as long a the world owns a wilderness. The wolf gave us the dog and for this one fedft alone it will be worthy lc remembrance in the days follow ing the final extinction. Dau ring in the South. F:nt Buffalo Jn AutoJ. Hookwoim Is Curable. Faoaaa City Star. The only case of hootworm in Students of agricultural co tions in the Southern States at that there is no better section the country for profitable d:. ing and stock raising. The c ' : tick pest has been a serious I . back and has had not a to do in discouraging dairptn;; the South. With this pest eradicated by the aggressive work of state and federal authorities there is now no rea son why the farmer of the south should not appreciate the advantages of dairying. Some of the finest dairy herds in the country are found in the extreme Southern States and dairying is more profitable there, than in tbe colder sections whore lairying is so " - : ly carried on. There aresee .1 reasons for this. Cattle need not be housed so expensively and for so many months in the year.' Pasturage is cheaper and forage crops grow abundantly. Cottonseed meal, one of the cheapest and most efficient dairy feeds, is produced in abundance, and markets are unsurpassed. Perhaps the greatest benefit that can come to the South through the promotion of dairy' ing is tbe increased fertility of the laud. Theland will not only produce great yields but increases in land values must follow. Dairying consistently followed by tbe farmers of a community always increases land values. This is due not only to increased productiveness of the soil, but to the fact that the business itself is a very remunerative one. ine ooumern iarmer wno is anxious to improve his cir eumstances, and who may not be fully convinced of the benefits of dairying, should ascertain the truthfulness, of the above claims before deciding his course. He can secure such information from the U. S. Department of Agriculture or from any of the state experimental stations. The dairy cow will do more for the farmers of the South than she has done for the farmc of the North because eondithci there are even more favor; t for dairying. Hill's farm 20 miles away, and gave the clew to the whereabouts of the best that led to its death Reporters ascertained in their chase of the animal that it really was a lullgrown American bison, In an automobile the reporters began tbe hunt for an animal how almost extinct. ; Even the skeptical people of the county, who scouted the first reports of farmers, who was terrorized by sight of the beast, are convinced that it really was a buffalo. H-arly the countryside was roused and the chase renewed. After an exoiting' hunt - the animal was located in the heavy timber a quarter of a mile from Barney Monion's place, on the state road. ; COunty Attorney H. Pratt and Lee Giddings left the automobile, in which ; they had been pursuing ihe beast, and hastily entered the timber tract, On the other side of the woodland Pratt made out the creature dashing through a field of stubble. Though it was a long shot, Pratt fired. This was followed by a volley from Giddings, and to gether the men hastened in the direction of the clearing. A trail of blood was found, and another glimpse through the farther thickets showed that -the animal was hampered in his rapid flight by a slight limp.
