208 last Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday.

Mayor J. T. Shaw made the ad
dress of Welcome in behalf of Me

Remarkable Longevity.

Elisabeth City, July 24.—One
of the most remarkable cases of
longevity in eastern North Caro
lina is Mrs. Elizabeth Rhodes, of
Tyrrell county. She is reputed
to be 10S years old and there is no
doubt about her being over one
hundred years at any rate.
The oldest child born tqjier it
ho was living now, would be 78
years old. The oldest one th«t is
living is 76 years. The youngest
child that is living is 61 and the
youngest child born to was
boru during the time that the
people of Tyrrell county went to
Plymouth immediately after the
civil war lo take the oath of al
iegiunce.
She has never weighed more
than 103 pounds and has been
crippled three times, but is yet a
remarkable active woman.
Standing of North Carolina Banks.

The corporation commission
has worked out the standing of
the banks in the State and has
prepared a statement which shows
real health. (
•.There are 377 banks in North
Carolina now, an average of near
ly four to the county. They have
rt combined wealth of $71,144,-
154.83, The statement for June,
19U, was considered good, but
the showing this year is more than
eight millions From
all sources last year, the millions
invested in banks amounted to
$03,810,703.32. In cash items,
gold coin, silver and all minor
currency, trust deposits and mis
cellanies, there was a deorease.
This amounted to $192,438.99.
Subtracted from the greater
amount there were found credits
amounting to $8,124,883.90.

Design for Home Monument to
Women.

The design for the monument
to North Carolina Women of the
Confederacy, to be given by Col.
Ashley Home to the State, was
selected this afternoon. It is the
design showing-the figure .of a
Southern woman and Southern
youth as central figures. The
other design offered was that of a
Southern woman with a Southern
maiden beside her, bo*h designs
being by Augustus Lukeman, se
lected some time ago as tbe sculp
tor for the monument.
The idealized Southern woman
and grandson are to be posed on
massive granite base on either
side of which will be iu bas relief
figures illustrating the going forth
of the Southern meu to war with
the blessings of the herote women,
and the returji of the war-worn
remnant to wasted homes and
heart-broken wives and daugh
ters.
There will be a paved square
extending from the rear of the
monument to the curb about 15
feet, the paved court being about
30 , feet long. , Seats will be ar
ranged at either end. There will
be a privet hedge at the back and
two sides.
The monument w.ill have a place
in Capitol square facing the main
entrance to the new State build
ing for the erection of which Col
onel Home is chairman of the
building coinmission.
It is expeoted that tho monu
ment will be in place within a
year.

Judge Newman, of the United
States court, rendered a decision
in Atlanta last week restraining
the State of Georgia from subject
ing the property of the Georgia
railroad, leased by the two sys
tems, to an ad valorem tax. The
court held that the ad valorem tax
could only be applied to the prop
erty of tbe Atlanta Terminal Com
pany and not to the remainder of
the Georgia railroad property.
The latter, the court ruled, comes
under the original Georgia rail
road charter exemption, in spite
of the fact that it is controlled by
the lessees. By the decision the
State loses the tax income on prop
erty valued at $9,500,000.

week voted $400,000 in bonds for
public improvements. The bonds
