Congratulations. —Unavoidably the County Com missioners' proceedings are left out this week, but will appear in our next issue. ' —The St. Louis Amusement Co. will be here next week. It will be a regular street carnival and everybody is expecting a big time. . i —Elon commencement exercises come to a close today. A number from here attended and enjoyed the splendid exercises. A full ac count next week. —Harvest time is close at hand. Wheat and oats are ripening rap idly and within a week most of these crops will be harvested. The wheat crop is good, but the oat crop was damaged by late frosts and the dry weather when just beginning to head out. —Memorial exercises at New Providence last Sunday were largely attended, many coming from a distance.* It was a beau tiful and sacred exercise and the old friends enjoy the annual meet ings and the renewals of acquain tances. —An Alamance boy, Mr. J. A. Holmes, won the debaters' medal in the Inter-Society Debate at Chapel Hill Tuesday evening be tween the Dialectic and Philan thropic Societies. He represent-' ed the Di. and is a son of Rev. Geo. W. Holmes of Albright town ship, who enjoys the distinction of having three sons in the Junior class during the past year. —The Town Commissioners at their meeting Monday night, be sides attending to routine busi ness, such as passing on accounts, appointed the following commit tees : Street, Sam T. Johnston, T. C. Montgomery, W. H. Holt; Fire, W. H. Holt W. J. Nicks, «T. J. Reavis; Cemetery, Sam T. John ston, T. C. Montgomery, W. J. Nicks; Sanitary, T. J. Reavis, W. H. "Holt, Sam T. Johnston. The Board will meet again Friday (tomorrow) night, when a Chief of Police will be elected. For this position there are the following candidates: J. R. Guthrie, Col ' lon R. Mann, W. F. Foust, Simon Jerreil, Wm. Smith, J. D. Moon, and S. L. Moon. From the num ber of candidates it would- ap pear that it*is a very desirable office. Birthday Celebration. On last Thursday, May 29th, Jno. M. Parry celebrated his 7Sjd birth day. His family planned a sur prise for him, and early In the day his neighbors and friends be gan to arrive until the guests numbered fully fifty people who had come to celebrate with Uncle John this important event in his life. When the dinner hour ar rived all were invited into the dining room where the table was loaded down both with substan tial and delicacies of every kind of eatables—it was a dinner fit for Kings, and all seemed to enjoy it to the fullest extent. J. Robert Parker, pastor of the Friends church was among the guests, and was what might be termed master of ceremonies. It was a day memorable in the life of Uncle John, as he ta now familiarly known, and one ever to be remembered by every one pres ent. ' Robt. P. Price, a wealthy and prominent citizen of Rockingham county, died Thursday while en route from hia home to ReldsvlUe. He was traveling in an automobile accompanied by two grand children. The machine had been stopped, and while cranking it to a tart up Mr. Price became very tired. A passerby went to his aid and just as Mr. Price started to get into hia machine he fell dead.. I Two little sons of Green Hobby, s Raleigh blacksmith, got hold of a revolver and played with it. Green Hobby 8 years old canght the bullet and may not recover. Mr. William Menefee is at home from Danville where he has been in school for the past year. Miss Marce Goley is attending commencement at Salem Female Academy this week. Dr. W. S. Long, Jr., and son Her bert and Mr. Hansford Simmons attended commencement at the University. , Tl Miss Agnes Wood, who has been living in Greensboro, is visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. Chas. Dolph Long and Master George returned last week from a visit to her father at Stone wall, N. C. Misses Blanch Scott, Kathleen Long and June Ray Kerjiodle are attending commencement at Chap el Hall this week. Col. and Mrs. J. A. Long left' Monday for Suffolk, Virginia, to visit their daughters, Mesdames 8. B. Everett, J. C. Holliday and Hersey Woodard. Prof. J. B. Robertson spent Tuesday and yesterday at Chapel Hill attending the commence ment exercises. Mr. W. C. Curtis of Toledo, Ohio, spent from Sunday till yes terday in the county visiting rel tives. He formerly lived three miles South of Graham. Mr. R. E .Hunter of Charlotte arrived here Saturday with his two little daughters, Margaret and and Mary, to spend a few days with Mrs. C. S. Hunter. Miss Martha Holt arrived home Tuesday from Red Springit, where she has been at school. She came home by way of Raleigh where she spent a few days. Mr. and Mrs. E. 8. Parker, Jr., and'little daughter Carolyne and Miss Bella Donoho left for Dula Springs, near Weaverville, where Mrs. Parker and little daughter and Miss Donoho will spend some weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Jag .D. Proctor and little daughter BUtabeth of Lum berton arrived here laat Friday evening on a visit to the home of Mri. Proctor's parents, Mr. and Mra. J. D. Kernodle.
