Rich carried her music class to Swepsonville Sat urday night and gave a delight ful entertainment to a large au dience. —The series of meetings com menced at the M. E. church Sunday night. Rev. P. C. Tate, the old Barton home, in Pleasant Grove township «as completely de stroyed by fire last Sundaj afternoon, as well as the outhouses The fire originated in an unused part of the jesidence. There was no insurance and the loss falls heavily on Mr. Tate. Fire in East Burlington. About half-past one o'clock yes terday morning the store of United Store Co. was found in flames and was nearly consumed when reached by the firemen. From this a near-by residence caught and Burlington firemen fearing they would not be able to cope with it, called on Gra ham arid ,the Graham firemen re sponded at once and in a few minutes were on the spot to help their neigh bors, but the fire was under control when they arrived. Mr. Bowman Hurt by Palling Timber. Last Saturday morning in tear ing down the old Scott & Donneil ■building a heavy piece of tim ber fell on Mr. Madison Bowman, a young man of family at work on the building. Mr. Bowman was stricken on the side of his head. A gash three or four inches long was cut. The timber glanced off to the shoulder and arm of Mr. Bowman. No bones are thought to have been broken, but he was so badly bruised lhat he has not yet been able to use his arm. He nar rowly escaped instant death. Social Items. Miss Mamie Parker entertained the young Ladies' Bridge Club last Friday morning. Mra. J. A. Long entertained the Sewing Clab last Friday afternoon. Mrs. C. B. Irwin entertains this morning in farewell honor of Mrs. E. C. Murray, who has been one of the leaders in all efforts of Graham Chapter of the l)aughters of the Confederacy since its organization. Miss Blanch Scott will entertain the young Ladies' Bridge Club this afternoon. Death of Infant. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E Rives, born on the morning of May 26th, died at 5:30 this morn ing. The remains were interred this aft«rnoon. Dr. P. H. Fleming conducted the funeral services. Among the Sick. Misa Margaret CI egg is confined to her room by sickness. Mrs. Berry is sick at her home at V Jfr. Will E. White's. Laafcy-Oameroo. The marriage of E. S. W. Dameron, Esq., of Burlington, one of the county's prominent and rising young attorneys, and Miaa Lola Lesley, one of Burlington's most attractive, popular and estimable young ladies, is announced to take place on June 10th. Court Notes. * May Term of Alamance Superior Court opened Monday with Judge C. C. Lyon presiding and Solicitor S. M. Gattis prosecuting for the State. This being a mixed term, a grand Jury was dtawn with Mr. W. J. Graham as foreman, and tWfc trial of th 2 criminal docket was taken up. The grand Jury dis patched business and finished its work yesterday afternoon and waa excused. The criminal docket will be disposed of to-day and the civ il docket will be taken up to morrow. Several road sentences have been imposed and the school fund has been materially increas ed by fines. « Some old offenders for selling liquor were before the court. Some of these have been on the roads, but the court gave them pVetty stiff fines this time. The effective course seems not yet to have been discovered, but the offenders will no doubt continue to build good roads or supplement the education al fund. Next week we will give a fuller account of the proceedings. DEATHS. . Mr. John A. Coble, prominent citizen of Coble township, died on 7th ipst. He was 71 years of age. \ Mr. John H. Gerringer, whose home was near Ossipee, died at St. Leo's Hospital in Greensboro, on 15th inst. The remains were buried at Shallowford. lie is survived a widow and eleven children. Mr. A. D. Madren f one of the best and moat widely kuown citi zens of Morton township, died on the 16th inst. at home near Altamahaw. The burial took place at Bethlehem on Sunday following. Mr, A. F. Apple died last Sun day afternoon at his home > in West Burlington, aged i7 years. He was a Confederate soldier and an estimable Citizen. Miss Mary Cathrine Foust died on 16th inst. at the home of her niece, Mrs. B. W. Johnston, four miles south of Graham in her 83rd year. The burial was at Mt. Hermon and the funeral was conducted by Dr. E. C. Murray. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Foust of Graham and Mrs. Geo. Clapp of Guilford County.
