Sylvan also won in a debate over Friend ship last Friday night The debat ers of the former were Algie -New lin and Harvey Johnson, and of the French Duncan and Homer Foster.j —Mrs. Jemima McVey died at her home at Snow Camp last Friday night, aged about 90 years. She was the widow of Baalam McVey,. and the mother of the late Thomas F. McVey. She was a daughter of Jonathan Moon, who died a few , years ago over a hundred years of age. Mrs. Sarah Bailiffe of this place,, now about 85 years of age, is a sister of Mrs. McVey. I —Prof. W. P. Lawrence of Elon College is at St. Leo's Hospital Greensboro, under treatment. A week ago small hope was enter tained, but later news is more en couraging. His many friends In the county., State, and elsewhere, are' earnestly hoping that this good and useful man will be spared and restored to health. —"Squire Sil Spoon of Patterson township was in town last Satur day. He will be 87 years 61d this ' month,, and for one of his fge one , rarely comes across a more active man. He has his cotton and corn ' land ready for planting, prepared by his own hands. He saia he was going to plant corn this week* whether he ever saw it again or not. He has lived on and worked his farm all his life, and is a mighty good citizen. —Nancy Long, a highly respect ed colored woman, died at her home about one mile Southeast of Graham on the Galbraith road last Friday. As a slave she belonged to the late Jacob Long. Her hus band was Alex Long, who died be tween 15 and 20 years ago. She was about 90 years of age. Rev. Dr. W. S. Long, of Chapel Hill, whom she nursed and cared for a£ a child,, and to whose* father she belonged,, came up aha attended the funeral Saturday. Foster of Liberty has decided 'to locate in Graham lor the practice of his profession. He was here the latter p irt of last week and secured offices in the Donnell building on the corner over Crawford & McAdams' store. Dr. Foster is an Alamance man. having been born and reared in Patterson township near Kimesvilla wh -re he had a large practice before go ing to Liberty. After doing a general practice for spverd _yeai", he took a special course in dis eases of the stomach in the Ameri can Hospital in Philadelphia, in addition to general practice) he will give special attention to diseases of the stomach and intestines. His office hours will be 11 to 12 a. m. and 7 to 8 p. m. We are pleas ed to announce his coiling. He expected to be here this week, but business matters prevented his • coming till next week. Dr. S. J. Moorefield Located Here. Last week 'Dr. S. J. Moorefield of Bayboro arrived here and will make thia his home for the practice of i medicine. He will do a general practice. At present he is at the Vestal Hotel bat as soon as his offi ces are finished he will have offices in the Paris building. We are glad to extend hinfa welcome to Graham. The Greensboro News of Sunday last says: "The Easter vesper aer ' vices at the State Normal College this year will be held Easter Sunday evening at 7:3»J o'clock in tMb chapel. Adamq. in Statesville. Mis. T. 0. Coble Dies Suddenly. The death of Mrs. Mary Coble, wife of Mr. Thos. O. Coble), about II o'clock last night, came as a severe shock to her family., friends and neighbors. She' retired apparently -in her usual health a short while before 10 o'clock. At times she has suf fered from asthma. Soon after re tiring she was seized with a parox ysm such as those afflicted with asthma are subject to. A doctor was called, but in a very few" min utes she died sitting on her bed side, before a doctor could be reached. Mrs. Coble was a most estimable woman- highly esteemed by all who knew her. She lived a quiet home life,, devoted to her husband and only child,. Miss Beulah Coble. Mrs. Coble was about 36 years of of age. She was a daughter of the late Jesse Johnsoo, formerly \ of G rah airy but later of Durham, : where he died about two years ago. 1 Her mother, Mrs. Johnson, her brother and sister. Mr. Sam W. and Miss Vida,. of Durham, and her 1 brother, Mr. S. A. Johnson of Hick ory arrived here this mornjng. An other brother,. Oliver, lives in Vir ginia, but at this writing he had been located. The funeral will be conducted tomorrow by Rev. J ,E. Thompson, former pastor of the M. E. Church. The sorely "bereaved husband, daughter and relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of a large cir cle of friends. Easter Services at M. P. Church. Bos we 11 cap tured a team of two mules and wa.ou, three men and 25 gallons of booze that were endeavoring to make their way through Graham on ih.ir wav to Burlington. The man in charge was James Perry of lli kory Moun tain, Chatham couuty, and two you ng negro men named Gtor.e Alston and Goley Williams, The officers suspected something wrong and under a street light looked into the wagon and saw the kegs. They were hailed and driven to the court h .use. Before reaching the court house Perry made a dash for liberty,, but he «.ih quickly hauled in, Deputy Al"*. r, Mayor Ward, who had lieen eiilii d up, and two young men who were just leaving Haves' drug store, j.till ing in the chase. 'Squire W P.. Smith was called and Perrv wan held in a 1400 bond to appear at A ngu/t court. The negro men later iM>e bond and were turned hose.
