Tells About It and Part He Took. .Btatcsvillo Landmark. ———— Tho following is an extract from a letter of June loin, written to StstcsvlMo by a young officer who is with the Scutch Highlanders"!!) if ranee: "You will oe pleased to note our late brilliant success. 1 will try to givoyouthe impressions of one who took an humble part in it. v hail everytuitig complete a bit before the battle opened and were stand ing by. It was quite a romantic setting. Our guns had been thun dering all nigut, but some little time nefore tne attack had become quiet, only an occasional shot oe ing fired. To us who knew what a change wss due to take place the quiet wss very noticcaole. tne day was Just breaking, we coulu see the outlines of tne ridge in Iront, a lark had just risen a.iout 100 yards in front and wss sing ing. A more peaceful summer I morning you couldn't imagine. Suddenly a dull column of dull reu flame leaped up in the sir on our left front, followed jy several more along tho line. It was a sight never to jo forgotten. The solid earth heaved and swayed In a most alarming manner. Our guns open ed up, everything In View wss blot ted out. V»e couldu't see 20 yards in front. "We got our machloe guns going, andfortite next hour our attention was tsken up with our work. They soy tho bombardment was awful, i cant prove it. The rattle of,the Sun which I operated no quickly esfened me 1 couldn't tell much about the artillery fire. It was well on the afternoon before 1 re covered my hearing. By 8 a. m. we could tell the attack had been a great success. We could see om men moving fre iy on the ridge in front— the rid go which had over looked our position tor two tears our bsrrsge hsd moved well be yond, prisoners were coming in. They were terribly shaken up, blsnched faces, anil some were reeling like drunken men; s con trast from th e smiling, sunburnt though perspiring faces of their guards. We have since learned that our M. Q. barrage was very effect ive and much appreclsted by the Infantry. Now you see how little one sees of s modern battle. We thought we might see the sdvance, but ssw nothing. "I have had some thrilling times since and also before the attack, so I am all for the quiet lit?." A special commission of the Be nevolent and Protective Order of Blks has been appointed to deter mine how the million dollar war re lief fund voted by the order shall 1 be spent. LOOKS AMERICAN-LIKE WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED. ) ■ Drink More Water Than French- Bathe Oftener —Have Lively American Music—Camp Has Air of Orderliness. American Training Camp iu ■ France, July 17.—The American troops have been here for less than a week—they are not all here by any means—and they have already made themselves thor oughly at home, so much so that this section of France looks like a little bit of America. The correspondent made an ex tended visit to the encampments this morning and found the men fit aud in good spirits, and full of praise for the friendly co-opera tion of the French people, who have willingly and gladly given up many of their owu comforts to accommodate all the Americans who have arrived aud so the country-side is dotted with newly erected barracks that have sprung up over night and make even more picturesque this beautiful neighborhood. Water is übandant here, but uncertain as to purity, so the troops are „ adopting filtering methods by means of bags sus pended from tri-poles, which as tonish the local inhabitants almost as much as the American's inex plicable thirst for water, which is unknown to wine drinkers, many of whom seldom touch water. It is a task which the army had taken upon itself in the clearing up of the entire countryside and at tho present pace the whole dis trict will soon look like a well ordered garden. Such prisoners as are under arrest for minor in fractions of the regulations are employed each morning in mak ing headquarters spotless and are bringing such a degree of orderli ness into the place that the origi nal residents are amazed. Like wise they find it difficult to under stand why the soldiers take so many baths, for the men make for the nearest stream and dive iu as soon as they are at liberty. The presence of the soldiers here lyw naturally introduced many novelties, but probably none is more welcome than the daily evening concert, which attracts people from far around, people chiefly who have never heard lively American music and who have been without music since the outbreak of the war. An attractive feature of the camp is a lion cub, which occu pies a corner In the camp of a certain regiment. The cub was presented as a mascot by Ameri-, can residents in Paris, lie was young and playful aud harmless a short time ago, but is growing astonishingly and is a veritable terror to the townspeople and now a source of doubtful amusement to the soldiers, many of whom bear scratches to testify to the nature of his playfulness. An oven more strenuous course of training is in force here than at tho original camp near the lauding of tho troops. The itieu work a minimum of eight hours daily; the officers from 12 to 10. In addition, they take tre ineudous hikes to get into condi tion. Here and there one falls by the wayside by the exertion, but the majority are standing the gaff iu a way that speaks volumes for the.efficiency of the system, ■lew's Till.
