White; Circle No. 2, with Mrs. Frank Moore; Circle No. 3, with Mrs Mcßride Golt on Monday afternoon, Jan. 10th, at 3 o'clock. Special School Tax Voted. An election was held in Morton township on Tuesday, 6th inst., for a speoial tax school district in Mor ' ton township and was carried. There were 34 registered voters, 27 of whom voted for the special tax and 7 against. Program Committee of Providence Memorial Association. Mr. E. S. Parker, Jr., Prest., has appointed the following as program committee fer Providence Memorial Association, viz; Mcßride Holt, Miss Mamie Parker, J. M. Fowler, Dr. Will S. Long, Jr., and Mrs. Chas. *P. Harden, who will prepare a pro gram for the annual exercises to be held on the first Sunday of June, next, it being the 6th day of June, 1 1920. Guests for Wedding. The Board of County Commis sioners met in regular session on Mond.av, January sth, and transact ed business as follows: i License was ordered issued to Dolph Wicker to peddle in Ala - mance county in accordance with Sec. 44, revenue act. Will Bass and wife were allowed $3.00 per month to be furnished by R. F. Holman. The report of the Public Welfare officer, Dr. P. H. Fleming, was ac cepted aud filed and requested to be prepared for publication. R. A. Lutterloh and W. 0. War ren were appointed a committee to investigate as to damage to the mule of Ed. McCauley caused by falling, through a bridge. y The assistants of the county ap praisers were allowed $5.00 per day for services. It waa ordered that SI,OOO be set aside for sinking fund of bonded in debtedness. The petition of J. C. Freeman for change in public road near Spring Meeting House was granted, pro vided there is no objection on part of the property owners. T. J. Gwynn was appointed com missioner on the High Rock road to take the place of W. K. Holt, who could not serve, assess dam ages and benefits on acCountdf said road. W- D. After several interesting games, the guests were invited to the dining room ' which had been tastily decorated in pink and wbite. In the center of ; the table there was a miniature bride. On entering the room Miss Josephine Thomas for the hostess presented a set of gold pins to the guest of honor who waß escorted to a chair specially prepared and beautifully decorated for her. Yesterday afternoon from 4 to 6 9'clock Mrs. J. N. Taylor and Miss Annie L. Folger entertained at the former's home, giving the bride-elect a miscellaneous shower. Little Mil s Winston Wicker, daintily attired as a bride, entered to thtT strains of Mendelssohn's Wedding March and presented Miss Long with a basket filled with articles oi beautiful handiwork. Last night sthere was a rehearsal at the Presoyterian church and after ward a reception was given at the home of Miss Long's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Will S. Long, which was attended by the members of the bridal party, intimate friends and relatives. I Mid-Winter Press Association. A Mid-Winter meeting of the 1 North Carolina Press Association was held at the O. Henry Hotel in Greensboro last Thursday and Fri- 1 day. More than 100 members of the i craft were present. '1 he cost of print paper was taken up and the con census of opinion was that about the only way to meet that and other high costs incident to the publication of a newspaper would be to increase sub scription and advertising rates. i It was the pleasure of THE GLEANER to spend Thursday evening with the brethren, renewing old acquaint ances and making new ones. Thursday evening the social fea ture of the meeting came off. It was a banquet at the 0. Henry, where the members were entertained, : given complimentary to the Associa tion by Greensboro's two excellent daily papers, The News and the Record. It was a fine spirit of hos pitality and good fellowship which prompted these papers to assume the expense of such an elaborate spread. During the evening excellent and enjoyable speeches were made by the speakers named below. It would be a pleasure to give a synop sis of the speeches, but -we must forbear. Y. | Endeavors Union Meeting Held in Bar- Hngton Monday Night—Officers Installed-Graham Christian Church Society Awarded Banner. The regular msss meeting of the Burlington-Graham Christian En deavor Union was held Monday night at the Reformed church in Burlington at 7:30 a'clock. Thia was the first meeting of this organi zation this year and plans were laid for greater activitiea daring the year. * The theme for the meeting waa "What Chriat Would Have Us Do This Year for Oar Church, Our Community and Our Union," which topica were diacuaaed very intereet ingly by Rev. J. W. Harrell, Mr. F. L. Gibbs and others. After thia a Purpose Meeting was held and each one preaent made some definite purpose as to what they purpose to do along the line of Christian ser vice for the year 1920. The newly elected officers were then installed by Rev. J. E. Pritchett, Rev. J. W. Harrell and Rev. F. C. Lester. The officers for the year being J. O.
