THE GLEANER ISSUED KVEKY THURSDAY. I J. D. KERNODLE, Editor. $1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE. Entered at the Postolflce at Graham, N. C., as aecOuu-viluBs matter. GRAHAM, N. C., JUNE 9, 1927 ANOTHER NON STOP FLIGHT Clarence D. Chamberlain and his backer, Chas. A. Levine, hop ped off from Miueola, N. Y., Sat urday morning at 0.05 in a Bel lanca plane for a non-stop flight to Europe. Berlin was their ob jective. For lack of gas they were forced to laud 70 miles southeast of Berlin. In this non stop flight they covered over 3900 miles, besting Capt. Lindbergh's record flight by some 300 miles. The report has gotten out that Mr. Coolidge will call an extra session of Congress for some time in October, but the president neither confirms nor denies. Capt. Lindbergh is a great big fellow. He showed the utmost concern about the success and safety of Chamberlain's long flight. He said, "Chamberlain deserves great credit for his ad mirable'flight. I have sent him iny personal congratulations. The plane, the motor and the man were all good." lie is not jeal ous. A reception of such magnitude never before awaited the return home of a private citizen as that now awaiting Capt. Lindbergh. He will go direct to Washington on the U. S. S. Memphis, expecting to reach there early Friday night. President Coolidge will decorate him with the highest honors con ferable Nupon a private citizen, and his reception will be brilliant almost beyond description. Poultry Need Care in Hot Weather. Though egg production drops in hot weather the poultry flock should receive attention so that best results may be secured when production starts on the upgrade again. "The decline in egg production begins in June," says- Dr. B. F. Kaupp, head of the poultry de partment. "We estimate that each hen will average about 13 eggs each during this month. The breeding season is also over in June and it is a wise plan to sell all the old male birds not needed for another season. Those males that are wanted should be placed in a separate field with pleuty of range and a comforta ble small house. The male is not needed for egg production and when he is kept away from the flock, infertile eggs are produced, An infertile egg keeps better in hot weather than a fertile egg. In any case it is wise to gather the eggs frequently and market theui at least twice each week. For best prices, they should be kept clean and cool." Dr. Kaupp suggests that il would be a good idea to caponize a few of the early cockerels and grow them out on range this sum mer for the holiday trade. Ca pons are in demand around Thanksgiving and Christmas and with a little care, a good trade in capons may be built up. When birds are dipped to con trol body pests, a warm daj should be selected and a solutior of one percent zenolenm or soin< other coal tar dip used. The house should be well ventilated Open the rear ventilators but dc not permit a draft to blow acros: tha hirda Red mites play havoc with th< vitality of the farm flock, statei Dr. Kanpp. For this reason it if not a bad plan to paint the perct poles with pure dip or sjme uset cylinder oil that has been dilutee with kdrosene. All birds need plenty of shade and fresh clean water durinj summer and the poultryman wh< does not provide these siinpli necessities makes a serious, mis take, advises Dr. Kanpp. A farmer serving as a witnes in court recently could not au ewer the question, "What is j farmer?" This man says h would like for someone to giv him the correct answer. .0 t? Southwest Alamance Cor. of The Gleaner. The funerals of Kobert and George Amick, relatives, and both residents of the Mt. Pleasant community, were largely attend ed. Kobert was buried on the 5th and George on the Oth of Way in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. I thiuk the weather prophet was right that predicted a suin merless summer. We have cool weather and not much rain. Some crops are looking line while others are not growing any. We have had{quitean epidemic of measels in our community. All are better now and 110 new cases. Congratulations for the much needed work we are getting on our roads. Let the good work go on; there is much more needed. Follow the -small grain with a planting of soybeans or eowpoas for hay and seed. Anson county delivered 40 per cent of the cotton from its district to the cooperative cotton associa tion this season. The farm outlook in Leo county is said to bo better this spring than in the last four years. The land is in good condition and there are good stands of both cot ton and tobacco. A supply merchant of Zebulon in Wake county is purchasing and selling soybean seed at cost as an inducement to get more farmers of the section to grow hay and feed this year. Extension circular 114, "Can ning Fruits and Vegetables," by Mrs. Jane S. McKiiuinon gives the best methods used by homo de monstratipu club women in tak ing care of their surplus produce.
