THE GLEANER GRAHAM N. 0., APR 17, 19.10. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY . J. D. KERNODLE, Editor. BS1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE. Entered at trie Post-office at Graft am. j N. C.. a* aecouu olaM matter. | The Tax Question A meeting was held In the court house last Saturday morning in re sponse to a request that each coun ty hold a meeting and appoint delegates to go to Raleigh on he 21st, to consider ways for reducing land taxes. A fair representation was present, not as large, however, as was expected. A good list, some twenty-five, were named to represent Alamance at the State meeting. The protest is wide-spread a gainst high taxes. It comes from all parts of the State. The effort will be made to find something else than land upon which to place the burden. Speeches of protest sound alright, but they will not get the thing desired. There must be leg islation?something of a construc tive character. There are a few things that must be changed before there can be any appreciable reduction in taxes, that is, some of the holes into which the tax money is poured must be plugged up. That done, so much money will not be required. It is true as to Alamance coun ty, and no doubt the same condi tion prevails in most counties oi the State that the overhead ex penses of he county have grown beyond what is needful. "Retrenchment and reform" usee to be a campaign slogan years age ?so long ago that few of the pres ent generation ever heard it. Bui It is needed now as much as it wa; ever needed. The present county administra tion (the Republican,) in the cam paign two years ago, before th( election, promised economy. I: anything outstanding in that direc tion has been accomplished, it ha; not come to light. Nor was it hardly expected thai there would be much of a slashing In expenses. The Democratic ad ministrations preceding had gone to considerable lengths in speachng for several years, and when the !te publicans came in, after being out for almost a generation, they had applications for the jobs a plenty and the inclination was to take care of the partisans. In short, there are too many salaried employees feeding at the public crib. Some of these must be guillotined before any substan tial reduction In taxes can be ac complished. For Congress j Up to a week ago it appeared there would be a full quartette of candidates for the Democratic nom ination for Congress in the Fifth District to succeed Ma J. Chas. M. Stedman. But the number has come down to two. Hon. Sam M. Gattls of Hillsboro was one among the first to let it be known that he was a candidate for the nomination. And his offering was received with favor by many of bis friends and acquaintances in the district. He is well known, better known than any of the Others, in the greater part of the district, being rather centrally lo cated and having ably served as Solicitor for several terms in a ma jority of the counties of the district. But he has given it out that he Is so longer In he running. He has a large number of loyal friends In Alamance who would have been pleased to support him and will re gret his decision. That he is able Hid well equipped would not be jgpestioned. John Folger of Mt. Airy, Su'ry bounty, threw his hat in the ring g month or so ago, but withdraw : two weeks ago. The above out of the way leaves EL Ph to A. F. Balhs of Winston ? . I Salem and Frank Hancock, Jr., of Oxford, one in the extreme western part of the district and the other in the extreme eastern part of the district. They are scarcely known in Alamance. Both are compar. - tively young men. And each has the hearty endorsement of his home folks as being fit in every way ta represent the district in Congress. The nation has started playing baseball this week. The sport will j hold the boards from now on through j the summer. In the news columns of some of the papers a gentleman is reported | to have died In Durham, aged 76 years, who served throughout the ! Civil War. On the 9th of this I month, 65 years ago, General Lee surrendered at Appomattox court house and the war ended. If the age is correctly given the gentle man was only 11 years old at the surrender, and to have served four years was only seven years old when he entered the service. It is true many Southern boys were in the j Confederate army and still in their I teens when the war ended. Judge John J. Parker's confirm 1 ation as Associate Justice of the Su j preme Court of theUnited States is I being delayed, perhaps, endanger j ed. Organized labor has entered protest on account of a decision rendered by him adverse to the organization, but in compliance with the written law, it is asserted, j Next comes along a negro organ | ization with objections on account of a statement he is alleged to have made when a Republican candidate for Governor in 1920. What he 1 said, it is alleged, has been greatly distorted for opposition purposes I ' Receiver's Sale ot Real Estate. This the 3rd day of April, 1930 THOMAS D COOPER, Receiver l'iedmont Trust Co. J. Dolph Laag, Att'j. Senator Borah of Idaho is reported in opposition along with several Northern Republican Senators from tates where the negro vote is heavy. It has not been noticed that a single Southern Democrat Senator is opposed to Judge Par ker's confirmation. No attack has been made on the question of char ! acter, fitness and ability. Farmers in one community ol I Lincoln county will home-mix more than 200 tons of fertilizer this sea son, says Graham Morrison, county agent. A Weldon commission firm reports the sixth car of seed Irish pota toes sold to Halifax county farmers this spring as compared with an average of two cars a year for the past several years.
