1 HE GLEANER^ GRAHAM. N. C., MAV 22, l'JJO. ISSUED KVEBY THURSDAY. J. D. KERNODLE, Editor. $1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE. Entered at tfio Poa'oflice at (irahan. W. 0.. a* awnn.u-olai" matter. Bishop James Cannon, Jr., has been "lot oft" for his stock gam bling escapade. He made a sor rowful statement, shed some tears and acknowledged his error. Pre viously he had been exonerated on account of his political activities. Owen J. Iioborts, nominee for Associate Justice of the Supreme^ Court, was 0. K.'d by the Senate Committee and confirmed unani mously by the Senate. The "wet" charge against him was entombed. Senators must have worn out their objectional mood on Judge Parker. SEMI-CENTENNIAL. Fifty years is quite a period in the life of an individual or the existence of anything in this earthly paradise, measured by the span of human life. But that is the period of time in which this writer has been en gaged in directing the des'inies of this newspaper. On May 18th, 1880, Capt. E S. Parker, then owner and editor of the paper, formally conveyed the property to the writer and T. B. Eldridge, now of Raleigh, and on May 20, 1880, we published our first issue. A little less than two years later Mr. Eldridge disposed of his interest to the writer, who has had sole charge since. If our information is correct, there is not another newspaperman in the State that was in the busi ness prior to May 18, 1880, and still active in the business. During this fifty year span momentous changes have happen ed in Nation, State, County and Town. In subsequent issues we shall tell about some that have occur red in Graham and Alamance County, believing that they will be noted with interest by the readers of Thk Gleaner. Will Teach Grading to Cotton Growers A six weeks course in cotton grading and classing will be offer ed to growers, buyers, warehouse men, mill-men, and scientists In terested In cotton lint at the State college summer school this year. The course begins on June 16 and lasts through July 25. "We have been conducting this short course in cotton grading since 1922," says Dr. J. B. Cotner, profes sor of farm crops at State college, "and during that time have had men on attendance from every cot ton growing country In the world and from nearly every cotton grow ing state in America. The United States department of agriculture co-operates with us, supplying sam ples of cotton and an expert ;rader and classer. This summer, J. I.1 Johnson, expert grader from the Dlvlson of Cotton Marketing in Washington, will be with us. Mr. Johnson will assist In giving a prac tical but thorough course in grad ing and stapling." Dr. Cotner explains that thou sands of samples of cotton repre senting most of the grades produc ed In the United States will be available for study. The universal cotton grades worked out and es . - - t? - l?w ?? FARM NEWS NOTES Millions of Tobacco, cabbage, pepper and tomato plants are being set In the fields and gardens since the good rain. Mr. J. A. Evxans, assistant chief of ac ricultural extension work, Watli in"ton, D. C., and the first county a " nt appointed in the United | States spent one day with the Ala mance county agent. Dr. Lehman, of State college, spent one day in the county this week examining tobacco plant beds to determine the relation of tobac co diseases found in the bed to those found in the tobacco field. E. Y. Floyd, tobacco production specialist, State college, has started demonstrations with Braxton Biv ens and L. L. Cook. In selecting registered Jersey heifers, bulls, and cows to go in the county sale on May 30, we found the quality, and general appear ance of the animals were in direct proportion to the quality of the pastures they were grazing. Looking for a calf or cow through Cedar thickets, briars and bushes is not "down in the pasture" ac cording to my notion, but rather it is "out in the wilderness." Approximately 100 farmers and their wives have sent notice that they expect to attend the Jersey Breeders Banquet on May 29, 7:00 P. M., at Melville Dairy Farm No. 2. Dr. H. P. Arbuckle, the principal speaker for the banquet is a ve;y, humorous speaker, abounding with wholesome Scotch Jokes. Dr. Ar buckle is a national authority on sheep growing and is a breeder of registered Jerseys. The musical program is getting into splendid shape. We are looking forward to a lot of good music at the Dairy banquet by George Rob erson's string band. The Alamance Jersey Breeders' consignment sale on May 30 at Me ban? fair grounds will be a great event to the dairy people: 37 head of very attractive animals will be offered at auction. The Pleasant Grove 4-H club boys and girls had a delightful weiner roast at Dixon's swimming pool Friday evening, May 16. W. KERR SCOTT, Alamance County Agent. I ' Garden Beans Suffer When Beetle Abundant Now that the Mexican bean bee tle, destructive pest of snap and lima beans, has spread over the en tire state, those growers who like fresh beans from their own home gardens must prepare to poison the pest or to do without this desirable j vegetable. C. H. Brannon, extension ento-| mologtst at State college, says che 1 Mexican bean beetle feeds on the under side of the leaves, seriously Injuring the pldnts. When Injury is very severe all parts of the plant may be fed upon and the plant be completely destroyed. The beetle prefers the common garden beans and the lima or butter beans. The next choice is beggar weed but in some cases, where ther# is heavy infestation, the beetle will attack both soybeans and cowpeas. One thing to keep in mind in poi soning the pest is that bean plants are very tender. Exact amounts of poison should be used and this poi son must be applied to the under surface of the leaves if it is to be effective. Mr. Brannon recommends the magnesium arsenate spray as the best control. Those growers having only small patch of beans may make up the spray by using five level tablespoonsful of the magnesium arsenate powder to three gallons of water. Larger' quantities may be prepared by using a pound of the poison to 50 gallons of water. Apply at the rate of from 50 to 100 gallons of the mixture to an acre of beans. One should begin to spray the plants when beetles are first found in the field. If they are numerous, repent the applications every week or ten days but stop spraying when the pods begin to form. Mr. Bran non finds that three or four appli cations are sometimes needed, though usually two careful sprays will be sufficient. It is often diffi cult to find dead insects in the best poisoned fields. tabllshcd by the United 8tates de partment of agriculture will be used as a basis for comparison Those who attend the course will be given a certificate from the col lege. Or. Cotner says also that many who have received these certificates have later passed the rigid exami nations given by the Civil Service for positions as federal graders. The course as designed by Dr. Cotner will give thorough training in cotton grading at small cost. Noi entrance requirements are asked The students must be mature and with a sincere purpose to learn what he can. A THOUGHT for SUNDAY ??v Amos K, Wells (Copyrighted' Christian Herald) SlCK SOULS Ancient bronze statues, coins, and other metallic objects are sub ject to sicknesses which are much like the infections of human be ings. They crumble away as with with cancer. They suffer as from tuberculosis. They are eaten as ulcers. And each of their many di seases requires a different method of treatment, which properly ap plied, brings back their former ac curate lines, the shining of their beauty, the charm of expresson, the delicacy of form. In human beings sin is a sickness, the soul is diseased. It suffers from many different maladies, requiring many different treatments. There is only one Physician of the soul, and (hat is the Son of God. When on the earth He healed fevers, re stored lepers, and brought back to life corpses that had been lying in the grave. What He did for sick bodies He did also for sick souls, and does for sick souls today. Sick folks know they are sick. If their bodies are sick, how they rush to physicians of known skill! Why not to the proved Physician of souls? Why seek to heal the spirit ourselves, when we would not dare attempt to heal the body? "Heal my soul, for I have sinned against Thee." ; ReadPSALM 41:1-10 Reports from all sections of east ern Carolina indicate a scarcity of tobacco plants due to dry weather and attacks by the flea beetle. He is a native of Southern Alamance and 'a Democrat all his life. He feels that he can be of service to the county and therefore is asking for support.
