(Prrpartd by tha United States Department of Agriculture.> Every year when planting time comes many farmers and gardeners are sur prised to find that their seed beans or peas are ruined by weevils even though the seed has been kept In tight ly closed containers. At one time these was a popular belief that weevils developed spontaneously from the germ of the seed, but this Idea has gradually given way as the facts In the life history of the weevil have be come more generally known. These facts are fully explained In a revised publication of the United States De partment of Agriculture, Farmers' Bul letin 1275-F, "Weevils In Beans and Peas." Infested While Growing. Beans and peas may become In fested with weevils while growing In the field. Female weevils lay eggs In or on the pods, and the young grubs work their way Into the seed by bur rowing out a hole no larger than a pin prick, too small to be seen by the unaided eye. After the seed Is har vested and put In storage the weevils continue breeding at a rapid rate. In fested seeds In bulk usually heat, thus producing the temperature and mois ture conditions most favorable for the rapid development and vigorous breed ing of weevils. Stamp Out Infestations. Infestations In beans and peas can be quickly and effectively stamped out, says the bulletin, by fumigation with carbon dlsulphlde, carbon tetrachlo ride, or hydrocyanic acid gas, and by means of heat or col<] storage. Weevils can be prevented from con tinuing to produce new generations In storage by mixing dust or air-slaked lime with the seeds. This remedy tends to dry out the seeds and kill the grubs within them. It also pre vents those weevils that succeed In developing from leaving the seeds. Copies of the bulletin, 1275-F, may be obtained, ns long as there Is a supply available for free distribution, from the office of Information, Depart ment of Agriculture, Washington, D. C. Experts Seek Control o? White Grub Insect Whereas the June bug, the parent of the white grub, always seeks the light on May and June evenings, agro nomists, entomologists and soils ex perts at the Wisconsin College of Ag riculture are going to turn the search light on the grub In an effort to learn his habits nnd to lay plans for bis control. The white grub causes a large part of Wisconsin's annual toll of $25,000, 008 due to Insect pests. The damage done by this particular one has been most severe where permanent pas tures have borne the brunt of the at tack, with corn and other crops also seriously afTected. Since It will be two years before the flight of the main brood of June bugs, the Insect which lays the eggs that hatch the white grub, Immediate ef forts will be concerned with combat ing the damngc to the crops now In the soil. For this work two farms each In Iowa, Grant and Lafayette counties, have been selected. Immediate experimental work will be concerned with determining wheth er a resistance can be built-up In blue grass pastures by fortifying the plants with additional food In the form of commercial fertilizers, vnrlous kinds and amounts of which will be applied. Fertilize Strawberry Plants Before Planting Strawberry plants should be ferti lized before planting In much the same manner as the berry bushes, but In addition to thq manure application rake In after spading four pounds per square rod of super phosphate. If a complete fertilizer Is used Instead of the mnnure, apply It before setting the plants. About mid-August It will pay to apply a light sprinkling of sulphate of ammonia on the strawberry blos som buds for the next year's crop. This should be applied when the leaves are perfectly dry and that which falls on the leaves should be Immediately brushed off with a broom, because It will burn the leaves If not removed. Undoubtedly the one thing which makes poultry profitable Is the ability of the flock owner to produce eggs during those months In the fall and winter when egg prices are high. Off season egg production cannot he ob tained unless the flock is housed in a building which provides something like spring and early summer condi tions when the thermometer outside tells us that it Is winter. Pullets and young stock now are ranging outdoors. Eggs are being produced in great quantities and prices are low. Were it not for the fact that a large percentage of eggs produced in the spring go Into cold storage, egg production would be un profitable and nt that It is only those poultrymen who are able to produce a maximum number of eggs at the lowest possible cost who are able to make any sort of a showing at this time of the year. Now is the time to begin to plan to build a good poultry house for the pullets which will begin to lay eggs next fall. There are a number of good types of poultry houses, one which Is shown In the accompanying illustration. This is what Is known as a two-gable house. It Is provided with a concrete floor and foundation and Is of frame construction. The house shown here is 24 feet hy 24 feet square, which provides about 300 square feet of floor space, which Is sufficient for a flock of about 100 White Leghorns or 80 to 90 layers of the heavier breeds. Cross sectional drawings showing how this building Is constructed, and the materials used, are shown in connection with this article. It will be noted that the side walls are 0 feet 6 Inches to the eave line. This Is of a height suffi cient for the placing of nests under neath the windows and permits the owner to move In all sections of the house without, discomfort. One feature of poultry bouse con struction which is most emphasized by those architects who have made a study of it Is tight construction. The modern poultry house is not only tight to the weather but Is provided with Insulation which keeps out the cold In winter and the heat in summer. This Is accomplished by using In sulnting board on Inside walls, allow ing an air spare between it and the outside walls. In this house Insulat ing board is used for the calling, leav ing the air space in the gabled sec tion of the building. This is not a difficult house to build. The architect's floor plans, cross sec tions of the side and end walls, etc. will show anyone who Is familiar with building how It Is constructed. Also reproduced are details of the nests, cross-sectional view of the window which is hinged so that it may be used as a ventilator and elevations and details of the roosts. Baby chicks which have been hatched in late winter and early spring should have plenty of range and the proper ration so that they will develop toto strong sturdy pullets ready to lay in the early fall. When that time comes a proper house should be ready for them. Cull China. Fixtures Are Marked as Such With the Increasing use in the home of plumbing fixtures made of vitreous china, the grading rules which have been adopted by the industry in con junction with the bureau of standards of the United States Department of Commerce should be of interest to builders. All vitreous china plumbing fixtures such as water closet bowls, water closet tanks, lavatories, drinking foun tains, dental lavatories, bidets, etc., are classified into two grades?regular selection and culls. Ware which grades below regular se lection is a cull and the rules of the Industry provide that every cull shall be plainly marked with two parallel lines cut through the glaze into the body of the ware, and that these cuts shall be filled with a bright red enamel or coloring. The cull marks for water closet bowls will be found on the back of the howl near the top. China tanks are marked on the in side renr near the top. Lavatories are marked on the side of the Bowl. Further to prevent any possibility of deception, every manufacturer places two splashes of red in a conspicuous place on the crate containing the cull. These marks do not mean that the ware Is insanitary or defective, but in dicate a difference in grading based on the number of unavoidable defects. Humidity Is Important in Preserving Health From one to more than sixteen gal lons of water a day should be vapor ized and circulated in the home to make the atmosphere humid enough for health and comfort This conclusion Is drawn from a study of scientific literature on hu midity written by cllmatologists, phy sicians and engineers. Unlike nu merous other authoritative works on the subject, the information Is couched in nontechnical form so that it may be read with Interest by every mem ber of the family. Scientists In these articles say the atmosphere In most American bomes Is as dry as that over deserts. The effect of this condition, they contend, is causing many of the colds and oth. er forms of sicknesses, and that the death rnte In the "dryed-out" homes Is comparatively high. They also say that the American young lady Is spending large amounts for cosmetics in an attempt to correct In her beauty the wrong that the dry air hag done Kill Moths Jg or They Will Cost You Money Get Your Flit and The Special d Here'* Additional Proof That Silence Is Golden Elihu Boot said in an after-dinner speech In New York on his return from Geneva r "Silence is golden in diplomacy. It is golden everywhere. ' "Once upon a time a corpse In a bathing suit was fished out of the sea and sent to an undertaker's. A rich young man called the nest day and identified the corpse as his fa ther. The young man was giving or ders to the undertaker for the most expensive burial in the establish ment's program when the mouth of the corpse fell open, and a row of false teeth dropped out. % " 'That's not father,' said the young man, and he hurried away. "The undertaker had been putting the corpse Into a mahogany coffin with gold trimmings, hut now lie put It hack on its stone slab again. " 'Idiot!' he said to It. 'If you'd kept your inoutli shut you'd have had an A-l funeral.'" Gave Telephonic Content Unable to attend the wedding of his daughter, Miss Florence Mills, a graduate of Vassar, Maj. Byron ,T. "I do," answered the bride's father In Seat tle and the marriage ceremony be came a fact.
