THE GLEANER GRAHAM. N. O., MAY 29, 1930. ISSt'KD ITEJtY THURSDAY. J. D. KERNODLE, Editor, j $1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE. Bnt?red at the Pos'offloe at Graham. N. C.. an aaoo^u-olana matter The primary election comes off ! Saturday a week, June 7t when candidates for the U. S. Senate,i Congress, Corporation Cornmis | siouer, County offices,, and others will bo z.oted for for the nomina tion. Senator Grundy of Pennsyl vania, Republican, spent ?291, 000 in his effort to get the sena torial nomination to succed him self, according to a Senate committee's probe, and was un successful. A candidate spending that amount <Jf money needs to be defeated. Josiah William Bailey, candi date for the nomination for (J. S Senator, is a Democrat without a bolting record and with a thor oughly consistent record as an advocate of temperance and pro hibition. Then, aside from these, he is a man of outstanding ability and plenty able to maintain his stand in any company, not ex cepting the United States Senate. If he shall be nominated and elected, no one would need feel ashamed of him. The pinch of hard times has put lots of folks ou an economy basis. The State has felt it nec essary to economize and Gov Gardner is moving along that line, recognizing that whatever the State has to spend must be con tributed by the people. That is the way to look at it. Every dollar that is handled , means work and sacrifice to somebody, though in its rounds it may be an "easy dollar" to some who come into possession of it. Funda mentally, it should, however, be remembered that primarily it is the product of toil. The Senatorial contest is the overshadowing issue in the pri mary to be held on June Vtb. Senator Simmons wants to suc ceed himself, and that, too, iu the face of the fact that he was an uncompromising bolter in 1928, and advised young Democrats to vote for the Republican nominee againBt the nomiuee of his own party. There was a time in Mr. ? Simmons' palitical career, when he was active in politics and working for Democratic suprem acy in the State, that he would not have shown a bolter auy quar ters. Now it is claimed for him that his action was that of coura geous statesmanship, and that op position to hitu is an attempt to punish him for following the dic tates of his conscience. Mr. Sim mons could have satisfied nis con science by going aloug quietly and letting other voters vote as they chose. This, however, was not enough, he chose to make his power felt by turning all lie could against his party's nominee. Did Mr. ' Bailey turn against his party's nominee, because that nomiuee was not in accord with everything be believ ed in? If every voter bolted be cause the nominee did not think about some things as be did, what, would happen? If so, we would hrve a mass of bolters and' every voter pulling in an opposite di rection. If wrongs exist in a party, they should be threshed out inside the party lines, and not in an efiort to disorganize the party and turn it over to the euemy. The new Blakemore variety of strawberry Is reported by J. F. Wil liams of lit. Olive to be more pro lific and vigorous than the Mission ary variety. Caswell county tobacco growers report a probable reduction of IS per cent In the tobacco acreage this year due to lack of plants and the campaign for more food, and feed ate, ini . We know of no officers that are. chosen in a county that should he, more carefully chosen thai: those, which compose the Board of coun-? ty commissioners. It is these thai levy the taxes ami direct the ex-1 l>< i.(littire of funds, and have the' general oversight of the county government affairs. If these, ie lax and unbusiitess like in tl: ir transactions the county's Ananas suffer. Therefore we hope to s -e nominated anil elected a Board of ! hard-headed business men Vote; for such in the primary. "Painting and Whitewashing on the Farm" is the title of Agronomy Information circular No. 50 ncv available free of charge to farmers of North Carolina on application to State college. Twenty-two poultry club mem bers out of 40 enrolled In Polk county last year completed their work and made reports. The 28 members report an Income of $549. 52 from their work. Wilson Jessup, 4-H club boy of Rlngwood In Halifax county, pro duced 54.5 bushels of corn on one acre at a cost of 47 cents a bushel while his father made only 60 bush els on 3V2 acres adjoining at an unknown cost, reports W.
