THE GLEANER GRAHAM. N. 0., OCT. 10, 1930. | [ c ISSUED CVEKY TBl'ESDAT. l' J. D. KERNODLE, Editor. 1, $1.00 A YEAR. IN ADVANCE. 'j? Entered at tne Pon'offlce at o iliam. 6 N. C., Al S60ond-olai? ma*t r C ?? = ? ti Attorney General Brummitt and n Ex-Governor Morrison Will Speak. 11 ,N Hon. Dennis G. Brummitt, attor- 11 ney General of Raleigh, will speak f' at the courthouse next Tuesday 0 evening at 7:45 o'clock. He is a fine lr speaker. On Wednesday at 8 o'clock p.m., Ex-Gov. Cam Morrison will speak 11 in the city auditorium In Burling- F ton. Gov. Morrison is one of the p Ci state's ablest campaigners. All who want to hear the Issues e< of the campaign discussed from the ^ Democratic standpoint should hear these able speakers. Everybody, especially the ladies, j are urged to turn out and hear these speakers. k Since the death of the late Sher iff John F. Harward, of Durham county, an investigation has been going on of the sheriff's office and a bad condition of the finances is disclosed. A shortage of around c $175,000 is reported. The "grim reaper" came In apt time, it seems. t Some of his deputies, it appears, t will not come out with clean hands., a The voluminous writer of Repub lican propaganda is finding daily something to stir his fountain of speech. If the ugly things, as they appear to him, were going on when he was county attorney (if we have P the right sow by the ear), why did he not call the attention of the f county commissioners, a Republi can body, to them and have them done as he claims now they should bave been done? c Next Monday has been mention y ed as the time for the trial of M. c W. Gant, late clerk of the superior ^ court of Guilford county, charged with various phases of misconduct, p in office, especially with regard to y Confederate pension matters. In- p vestigations which have been going ^ on reveal that he has received more' than $20,000 wrongfully. As a result' a about 20 indictments have been re- ^ turned by the grand Jury. 'v ilt Josiah William Bailey, Democrat ic candidate for the U. S. senate, was in the western part of the state (] on a speaking tour when Nye's in- ^ vestlgating committee was sitting ^ in Asheville the first of the week, p and he did the handsome and cour teous thing by calling on them, In' t) passing through Asheville, and pay- e ing his respects. This little act of courtesy will do him no harm when he takes his seat in the senate on j, the 4th of next March. Chairman Will S. Long, Jr., of the county election board, is of opin- ( ion, in voting precincts where the b number of voters is large, that c there will not be time enough for all the electors to cast their ballots 3 a In the coming election, as there are constitutional amendments to be n voted on besides those of the can- 3 dldates for office. If this is a warn ing, the voters should take due | f and timely notice to get to the polls as early as possible. Voting by the 13 Australian ballot system Is not as 1 quickly done as by voting the old f way t It Is regretable that the tobacco's growers have abandoned for the i: present the formation and organ-11 lzatlon of a co-operative association or associations. The Initiatory f steps no doubt operated to the ad- j, vantage of the growers In better b prices, but with no organization p this season the prices attained are r not likely to go much higher than a they are now. The time for an or ganization that would have been effective was short, so far as this * Mason Is concerned, but there v should be no let-up In the plans v and next season should find an or- v ganlzatlon ready for business. si fye Campaign Fund Committee < Senator Gerald P. Nye, Republl an of South Dakota, chairman of tie campaign funds investigating ommittee, and the two other lembcrs, a Democrat and a Re ublican, were in Raleigh Monday ar the purpose of investigating the xpenditure of funds, especially any oming from outside the state, in he Simmons-Bailey senatorial pri tary held on the 7th of June. Mr. Nye presided. The first wit ess examined was ExrGov. Cam1 lorrison. He told of his contribu-j ions to the campaign fund; that iirnished the state committee andj thers. He made a clean breast of , he said, and, so far as anyone I nows, he did. C. L. Shuping, Bailey's campaign lanager, also made a clean breast, or campaign purposes the cam aign committee in a senatorial ontest is limited to the expendi are of $10,000, This amount is fix d by statute. The schedule of Bai l's expenses as filed by him, was| little less than the legal limit. He aid he believed the schedule filed ?as correct. \ isone 01 wie witnesses examinea , new of any outside money spent :i behalf of the Bailey campaign. Everyone at all acquainted with olitical campaigning knows that small part of the money used goes hrough the hands of executive ommittees. No doubt many times lore was spent by local committees han by the central committee, but here is no law applicable to local nd self-constituted committees. 1 The committee moved on from taleigh to Asheville, where it was eported large sums were spent. Tie investigation there was as bar en of results as the sitting in Ra sigh. And then the committee licked up and went over in Tennes ee to investigate reports coming rom that commonwealth. To the credit of the witnesses ailed and the investigating com aittee be it said that the upmost ourtesy prevailed. Somebody does understand, but /e do not, why this committee ame Investigating in North Caro ina. Was it a political move on the art of Candidate Pritchard to weaken the strength of Bailey and ossibly effect his own election to' he place of senator? Or was the Investigation brought' bout through the supporters of Ir. Simmons who had been Hoo erlzed as a last chance to rebuke Ir. Bailey and his supporters? Then we are wondering why the ommittee limited its activities to he Bailey expenditures. Of course, | fr. Bailey having been successful | i the primary, there was no com-1 lalnt on the score of expenditures eard, nor would there have been; T the result should have been oth-j rwlse. In so many words, the commit ee said it saw no reason for the nvestigatton in the matter of ex-1 enditures?found nothing unreas nable. A report had gained currency ! hat large sums of money had een sent to this state to defeat ' iimmons, and as it was told over^ nd over the amount grew and; I rew. That such a thing happened , lobody that should know knows nything about it. I, Now that the investigating com-11 littee has come and gone and ound nothing worth while raising ,ny hubbub about, it is up to the1, tepublleans to get all the comfort 1 wssible out of the results. The politically wise are unable 1 o see where the cause of Bailey , uflered, but on the other hand it 1 s believed that his support is ma- t erlally strengthened. A great furror was raised by "our j riend the enemy" when a new reg- 1 itration was ordered in Burling- 1 on township. The pictures they are 1 Tinting is ample evidence that a j lew registration was needed after i , lapse of 22 years. Thirteen Oaston county farmers i islted the Coker farms near Harts ille in South Carolina to study the arieties of cotton being grown. The Isltors were looking for a variety litable for Oaston farms. j HOOD MARKET EXISTS I FOR BLACK WALNUTS ' I Both the hulled nuts and the 1 alack walnut kernels or meats are n demand by grocers, confection- , ;ry shops, or candy plants and the ] >ale of the walnuts may be made a : regular farm Income. , "There are many farms in North Carolina having black walnut trees producing nuts of exceptional value ;ach year," declares R. W. Graeber, extension forester at State college. 'Last year was a poor walnut year in most sections of the state and It ls possible the crop prospect is , h o r t h immediate investigation. 3ood black walnuts are always in iemand and there are local mar- , cets available in nearly every town ; n the state." In preparing the nuts for mar-11 ret, they should be gathered as loon as they fall, the hulls remov ?d and the nuts spread out to dry, ' lays Mr. Graeber. This keeps the i cernels bright-colored and sweet, tn old corn sheller may be used to ?emove the hulls rapidly and easily, f done while the hulls are still NOTICE! Scrubbing in an old churn or similar receptacle will polish the shells and make the nuts more at tractive to the eye. To cure, spread the nuts on a screen wire or board surface not more than ? three nuts deep. A moldy nut soon becomes rancid and of poor quality. Mr. Graeber says that many farmers of his acquaintance have developed a good trade direct with the consumer through the curb markets.
