THE GLEANER ; GRAHAM. N. 0., NOV. l'J, 1931. ' i IBS DID KTSBT TBUK8DAT . a 4. D. KEBNODLE, Editor j $1.00 A YEAR. IN ADVANCE. * ?ntsrsS iita* MMm aio?iiam. j ? H C.. M MUM-AlAAA GA1U1 J MUCH MONEY. r From the writing* of one regard- ' ed as wholly reliable, it is learned t that the saving* deposits by more a than SI,000 000 depositors amount to more than twenty-eight billions I of dollars^ or an average savings a deposit of pT, for each and every American. In New York State the c average is #119 for each inhabitant, aggregating more than seven bill ions, or about equal to the guld hoards of the United States and France combined. The writer fur- 1 ther states that the American aav- ^ ings deposits amount to about three c times as much as all the gold in the \ world. With ao vast a aum of money 1 hoarded, it is inconceivable that ! I there should be hard times, and one , cannot refrain from asking what is ] the matter. No two individuals t would probably give the same ans- 1 wer or reason?any answer would be ? a guess. Whatever the real reason for the depression is, it is covered up in < mystery?may never be cleared up. ' But so soon as the people begin to ; recover confidence in themselves | the purse strings will slacken and i spending will start again. Still the 1 mystery of it all will remain un- ; solved. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Alfred E. Smith had a conference at the New York executive mansion yes terday and lunched together. News paper reporters gathered in to get some dope. Roosevelt chased them out with the statement that there was not room enough in the same house for him and A1 Smith and a bunch of reporters. QueTried as to hia visit, A1 told the boys he would leave after lunch; that he was there to eat. After lunch A1 told the boys that "we talked state finances" four words?"and that's all". After the conference Roosevelt got busy to go away for a rest and had noth ing to say. That Franklin D. and Alfred E. know how to make a long story short is conceded. Associate Justice Louis Dembitz Brandies of the U. S. Supreme Court Was 75 years old last Friday. He was appointed to the Supreme Court bench by President Wilson and is the first and only Jew to sit on the Supreme bench. He is reputed to be completely devoted to the peo ple's interest. The wave of thievery in every conceivable form seems to be co v br ing the entire country. Culprits are overtaken every day and sentenced to prison terms, but the prospect of being caught and sent to prison does not appear to check the wave or deter the criminally inclined.
