THE GLEANER Imuran N. 0., MAY 12, 1932. ^ uaeu staky thgksdai I J. D. KEKNODLE, Editor. ' #1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE. I Botcred Attn? - -toilict AtGraha I .? a. M No 4lAA* miller TAX SALES DEFERRED ' ~ ? II Alamance County Coinmis- ^ sioners have put off till the first I Monday of August the making . of sales for delinquent taxes, i In doing so they followed the . action taken by many other ji counties in the State. Whether strictly lawful or not, it seemed expedient, an the action of the Board in ex tending the time for the pay-j ment of taxes .rill be generally approved. LINDBERGH BABY'S BODY FOUND. Late this afternoon news flashed over the wires that thei body of the 20-months-old sou, I Chas. A. Lindbergh, Jr., had; been found a few miles from the Lindbergh home. An examination indicated that the child had been dead some two months. It wa3 near a roadside and discovered by a truck^driver. It was partially buried and identified by parts of clothing and locks of hair. Alas, the tragedy of it all! A CORRECTION. In a former issue this paper attempted to give a correct summary of the cost of operat ing the various departments <iuartered in the county court house. In regard to the County Agent it was stated that he received $100 per month from the Federal Government, where as it is only $18 per month; instead of $1200 he receives $1340 per year from the State; for traveling expenses $500, making $3256, instead of $3, 600. But there is an additional expense for the County Ap nt's office which was not inch. ?<!: There is an assistant wl; ceives from the State a Binary of $1320 and an allowance o. $500 for traveling expenses per year. So that instead of the County Agent's office costing $4620 per year, it is costing $6096. A "Tax Payer" in the Open Forum column of the Burling Burlington Times-News makes some statements as to county officers' salaries that should Ite corrected. He leaves the iin "ression that the County Maua rer, Mr. F L. Williamson, gets fctiau? ne geis anu makes the pertinent suggest! n that the county could get along without a Couty Manager. Further that the County ac countant gets (2255?his salary is $2000. This writer gives the Sher iff"s office a big boost, placing the salary at (8,477.50. The Sheriff's salary is (3000, two office deputies, (1800 and (12f'0, respectively, or a total of (6000 for the office. That the cost of operating the county's business is top-heavy seems apparent. The salaries were fixed for flush times, when everybody was making money and spending it lavishly. Now times are different. Mil lions jobless and without money to buy. Everything is selling at unheard of low prices. With times as they are overhead ex penses should be reduced in the county's administration by at least $7500 without imposing any haidsbip on any one. COMPLAINTS RUN IN GROUPS. I When it cornea to taxes, whether direct or indirect, com- j daints come ae surely as do the ax levies. So ne, not a few, of the com dainants base their complaints >n the welfare of the other fel ow. That wo:.Id be fine if it were all sincere, but more often t is a sort of Trojan horse prop yl tion And here comes along the oankers. At their meeting at Pinehurst last week they ut tered a protest against the two :ent avenue on checks and drafts in the bill before Con gress .o raise revenue for bal-. ancing the budget and declared it "will prove most burdensome to the public and will retard commercial and financial recov ery.'' It's a tax and the protest was in order, notwithstanding the burden is one that the drawer of the check has to stand for. The bankers, at the time, ap pear to have forgotten some thing they do to the small de positor that is a bigger burden than the two-cent tax. Touching on this subject, "Clark's Comment" iu the Dail . News says: Also that bankers have been levying a tax of their own?call ed a service charge?which was applauded at tnis same meeting of bankers. This private bank er tax, alias tl. service charge, lis designed aim intended to cur i tail work in the bank by limit ing tb-> number of checki writ ten on small accounts. The stamp tax of two cents ou*each check will help to the same pur pose, since the bank patron will write checks with more . are. This levy m de by thj banks is a 50-cent charge on every check drawn in excess of four per month, in the event the de positor does not have a balauc. of $50.00 to his credit. See how this would work. Five hundred depositors with I less than the fifty-dollar bal ance and each drawing oni cheek over the four limit pei month would amount to $250? enough to pa /, pei-haps, tw. employes, to say" notuing of th interest the bank would gathei from lending the depositors' money. So, while the deposi tors are paying the bankers $250 per month, they are pay ing a revenue charge of onlj $10, >out which more concern is expressed than the larger amount that goes into the cof fers of the banks. Perhaps the bankers had bet ter stid nothing aboui the twu cent revenue stamp. Notice of Sale of Real Property.
