1 HE GLEANER ? ? i! GRAHAM. N. 0., MAY 4, 1933. \ ~ c ISSUED EYEKY TH0R8D4I J. O. KERNODLE, Editor. f $1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE. c Entered at tne -n'offlce at Graham. .N C.. as tecc t olaa* matter. J The Legislature has stayi ' qualities. A few days m> ; and it will surpass the reci d ^ of the 1931 session. I Holding a "wake" Sunday i night to welcome the return of beer at 12:01 ! Folks often do 1 lots of foolish things. Thisisjnst ' one of them. 1 The way things went in Gra ham's town election Tuesday makes one almost believe that the spirits of departed political workers came back and took a hand in it. Two months ago today Franklin D. Roosevelt took in hand the reins of government. Not in the history of the coun try have so many moves been made, looking to the improve ment in conditions of people and government, in so short a time. We hope they will turn out well. An effort on the part of some members of the Legis.a ture to limit the length of pub lic schools, where patrons are willing to tax themselves for the purpose, is high - handed business. Any town or com munity willing to pay extra money for school purposes should rather be encouraged. It's patriotic, progressive and forward-looking. Feitilizer manufacturers are groaning loud and long in anti cipation of the government put ting Muscle Shoals in operation. A writer says that the price per ton can be cut from $25 to $20 ?a cut of more than forty per cent. The users of fertilizers have taken a much larger cut in the price of their products, and it is only fair to shift a por tion of the burden. Congress is reposing unprt dented power in the Chief I ecutive. As a rule, such a coui e would be very hazardous. The people near to and knowing Mr. Roosevelt have confidence that he will use every power given him wisely and discretly for the betterment of the people and country. He has been assign id a difficult role, and may he ? keep on an even keel and cause no regret. The Legislature is trying to match its appropriation bill , with sufficent funds to balance it. It means nothing short ot > putting taxes in many places and on many things where they , are not wanted, which will cause lots of "kicking." Iu the last and final analysis the con sumer will pay the bill in high er costs for what he buys, which will distribute the burden in proportion t o the amount consumed?the consumer will have to regulate his consump tion. In fixing the pay, in the mat ter of the revaluation of proper ty in this county for taxation, last week the county commis sioners named $3.50 per day for the Supervisor and $2 50 for the appraisers with 5c per mile for each. At a meeting of the | Board this week the figures were changed to $4.00 and $3.00 respectively, based on a ten hour day. If this ten-hour day, a thing rarely observed by pub lie officials, is strictly adhered t to the service will cost less, * r reased?a sort of mild inflation u anticipation o f what may lappen in the event of the ac omplishmeut of certain legis ation proposed in Washington ind the consequent increase in :urrency. If the proposed 30 (or 3t>) iour-week sho.ld become law ind rict!v nforc;d, whai (voul become of the busines. chat lust kee going lull in liourn per day t ine or the work er doing ten hours ]>er day to make ends meet. Who would make up tha hortugo in pro duction or pay the deficit in accessary inco -ieV The propo sition don't look well fro i thb observation station. No man's right to work and business' right to operate, when employes are fairly treated and fairly paid, should be abridged, pro vidiug always that women and children are treated humanely. News Notes of Week on Alamance F< rms. By JJ. C. SHIVER, County Agent. Alamance Poultry I locks Rank High In Production Mr. C. F. Parrish, poultry oxten sion specialist, was a 'visitor jn the county last weeflc, and ho states that poultryraen in Alamance .coun ty rank among the beat in Vortl Carolina in efficiency of produc - tion. The birds In the i flodts o' the fourteen poultrymen, who fare ?ooperating with the county agent, averaged 19.63 eggs per bird fo: the month of March AnH^ the flocks showed an average above feed cost of $1973. The 6:ate av rage production for the month o' March was 18.88 eggs per bird. In company with the County Agent Mr. Parrish spent Wednes day and Thursday in this county visiting a number of poultrymen and advised them as to disease con trol, feeding, bre ding etc. Control Insects in The Ho-tie (iardtn For the control of insect peafs the first essential is 'good equip tnent. For the same gardener, *hr piece of equipment of (most genera use is a compres ed air sprayer o' 2 or 3 gal. capacity. A hand dus.e is also desirable. The second es sential is a 9upply of spray S'ti dust i terials. This brings up fh subject of practical means of mea surin spray pia erlals In Ismail a monn . Tho J ome gjrd ner is not usually equ. iped with (scales for weighing small amounts, and must thereforo seek more means of measuring the materials. An t ounce glass measuring cup is quite useful for this purpose. It Ss grad uated in thirds aid ^quarters and i? suitable for mea urlng mos' mat terials, Tho following control measures are suggested for some of the principal rests. Bean Beetle, Spray with Mag nesium arsenate at th ? rate of 1 pound to 50 gallons of water or 1 <.ince to s gallons. Begin spray ing as $oon as the adult beetles je come numerous and repeat every week or ten days or as often as necessary Magnesium arsenate may to used as a dust mixing l pound with three pounds of hydrated lime. The spray or dust must be applied to the under side of the leaves. Colorado llean BeetleSpray or dust with calcium arsenate or lead arsenate. For spraying use 2 pounds to 50 gailtyis of water 2 ounces to 3 gallons. If 'used rn :ho dust form, mtr 1 1-2 pounds of calcium or lead arsenate with ? 1-2 pounds of hydrated lime. Magnesium arsenate may he use 1 or this pest If desired. Us" it at double the strength recommended lor the bean beetle. Cabbage Worm Use the sam" materials and strengths recommend ed for the potato bertlr. A little map or calcium casdnate spreader will help make the spray materials itick to the smooth cabbage leaves, .'se one half pound of calcium ea? einate to 50 gallons of the spray niature or two level teable spoons o 3 gallons. Soap may be used at he rate of one'pouid to 50 gallons ?r 1 ounce to three gallons. Cucumber Beetle rj_ This fs the ellow that does so much damage o the young cucumbers, eatra - I oupes, watermelons. To con.rol . t apply a poisoned Bordeaux dust. 1 News of Whitsett. !( Whitsett, May 1, 1933. Mr. and Mrs. W. T.
