The long drouth in the great
wheat ? growing area of the j
' northwest became acute a few
days ago. Clouds of dust billow
ed over thousandsof square miles
and drifted hundreds of miles 1
beyond. It looked like the crop
was doomed and prices soared. |
Late rains have vastly inproved
the prospects.
Congressman Win. B. Um
stead, candidate for the re-nom
ination to succeed himself, is re
questing the support of his
friends in the June primary. He
is detained in Washington on j
account of important business |
pending in Congress and feels
that it is his duty to^ be there,
therefore he will not be able to
make a canvass of this district
and see his friends.
On Tuesday an election was |
held in Burlington to i>ermit a
property tax levy for the sup
port of the city schools. The
measure failed to carry. The
vote was against the registra
tion, as provided by law in such
cases, and not voting meant a
vote against the measure. The
large property owners who pay
the bulk of the taxes were for
the tax and are not responsible
for the defeat of the proposi
tion. Just why parents will
deny to their children the ben
efits which others are willing
to pay for is not only passing
strange but woefully short
sighted.
The Luke Leas, senior and
junior, after more than three
years battling in the courts over
charges against them in the dis
astrous failure of the Central

day. For the younger Lea his
step-mother has filed applica
tion with the Governor for par
don or commutation of sentence
of two to four years in prison
or a fine of 1^5,000. The plea
is based on his age, 21 or 22, at
the time, and physical condition

Tb> Nature of Braille
Six dot*, arranged Ilka the all (lots
of a domino, give the blind a key
which opens out for them the whole
range of literature and music. By cut
ting out one or more of these dots,
sixty-three dlfTerent combinations can
be formed, and the Inter-comhlnatlons
possible are Innumerable. This Is the
famous Rrnllle system, called Braille
after Its Inventor, and It Is used by
blind readers and writers In every part
of the world. The sixty three combi
nations allow sufficient variety to cov
er any ordinary alphabet and also the
punctuation marks and contractions.
They can also be applied to numerals
and music symlmls. A thoronth knowl
elge of the Braille system can be ac
nulred by a few weeks' study and pro
flclency In reading?performed by the
finger*?Is obtainable after about six
months.?Montreal Ilerald.
"Safety First"
The bureau of mlues says that the
phrase "Safety First" became a na
tlonal slogan In the year toil, when
the bureau of mines gave a national
safety-Arst demonstration at Pitts
burgh. Pa. Previous to this, the phrase
"Safety Is the First Condderation"
was used on the stationery and among
the employees of the H. C. Frick Coke
and Steel company of Pittsburgh and
the Illinois Steel company of Chicago
But since the national demonstration
these Arms and a great many others
dealing with safety appliances have
adopted thla phrase.

Rale of Finger Nail Growth
The nail on the middle finger grows
faster than any other, while the
thumb nail is the slowest growing
nail. As a rule, the nails on the right
hand grow faster than those on the
left. The nails on an invalid s hands
grow considerably faster than on the.
hands of a healthy person. Taken on
the average the rate of growth Is one
eighth inch a month, or from one to
one and one-half Inches a year.
