THE GLEANER IMC ID KVKBY THURSDAY J* D. KERNODLE, Editor $1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE JUnUred at the Poetoffloe at Graham. N. C., m second -claM matter. A? To Congressman-Elcct Durham When Judge Teague was suddenly stricken twelve days before election day, under the Democratic plan of organiza tion it devolved upon the Con gressional Executive Committee of the district to name a candi date in his stead. They named Carl T. Durham of Chapel Hill. The Committee in their two days sitting had been urged by person and other ways to name this or that one of the primary candidates and othera not for mer candidates. The out-stand ing plea was for Oscar Barker of Durham who lost to Judge Teague in the second primary, July 2nd. Prof. E. J. Wood hotute of Chapel Hill took the lead in the advocacy of Barker. He contended that in as much as Barker was the runner-up and attained the second place, he sh juld be the nominee and the choioe of the Committee. The Committee appeared to be dead-locked, for in the numer ous votings no one was able to carry a majority of the Com mittee. Carl Durham, not previously considered, was suggested by Committeeman 0. J. Coffin, who told about what manner of man he was ? was a County Commissioner of Orange coun ty, had been for six years, serv ed as town-alderman for 11 years, and district school com mitteeman for 20 years; that he was a fine business man, a gen tleman all-way round and held in highest esteem by his towns people. ? , Speaking of Mr. Durham, "Louis Graves, editor of The Chapel Hill Weekly, says of him editorially: "We people in Chapel Hill who know Carl Durham and what he has done in the service of the public are not disturbed by his lack of political experi ence. There are in Congress scores of shifty fellows with plenty of political experience, and too often it is employed in their own interest instead of in the public interest What we need more of in Congress is not political experience but honesty combined with good hard com mnnnAniifl and that combina tion i s embodied i n Carl Durham." No sooner than the nominee had been announced, Prof. Woodhouse took the position that the action of the committee was undemocratic and started a campaign t o have Barker's name written- in as the next choice to the late Judge Teague. Meetings were held to put across the contention. Some agreed with the Professor. Others con tended when Barker was elimi nated in the second primary, that he nor any other erstwhile candidate had no more claims to the nomination than any other citizen. That the Com mittee had been duly clothed with the power to act by the people who had elected the law makeis and elected delegates to aduly oaostttuted political con Ttrttor If it is democratic to delegate powers to legisatora and dele gates to conventions, wherein k it undemocratic for those who have been delegated to delegate others to do the things that would be too cumbersome and to meet emergencies? The nam ng of a candidate for Congress an en*rgsnoy. L " ELECTION BRIEFS Not Official Returns Alamance Democrats elected by a vote of near two to one for Republicans, except Robert son for Sheriff the vote was about 5 to 4. Voting was light? some over 10 thousand voted. Carl T. Durham's vote in this district for Congress was' over 3 to 1 for the Barker "write in". Senator Reynolds' majority over Charles A. Jonas will ex ceed 100,000. The State will send a solid Democratic delegation to the next Congress. Entire State Democratic tick et elected by large majorities. Gov. Lehman was reelected Governor of New York by a largely reduced majority. Republicans won eight seats in the Senate, certain. Indi ana and Iowa in doubt. In the House they gained 69 seats, conceded. In California the Domocrats elected a Governor, the first in over 30 years. The Republicans recaptured Kansas, the home of former Gov. Landon, Republican pres idential nominee in 1936. The Democrats replaced Re publican Governors in Mary land and South Dakota. In the Eighth Congressional district W. 0. Bur gin and C. 6. Deane, Democrats, had a pro longed and bitter scrap for the primary nomination. They got together and agreed on a way to settle it. Burgin was named by referees. Deane rolled np his sleeves and helped to elect Burgin by a splendid majority. In the nation, while the Dem ocrats are largely in control of both branches of Congress, the Republicans were inspired by sbustantial gains. The New Deal showed a decided waning. The President's "purge" in Georgia, South Carolina and Maryland was resented by the voters in a very substantial way. THE WAY OF PROGRSESS Two thing* are necessary to bring goods of *11 kinds to the consumer at the lowest possible coat. First, is efficiency in manufac turing. In this, America leads the world. Yon can boy a car for $800 that would cost $20,000 If it were made by haud. You can bay a package of breakfast food for Hfteen cents that would ooat a dollar or more were it not for mass production, which re daces the expense of manufactnr ing and packaging to the mini mam. Second, comes efficiency in dis tribution. It does the consumer no good if the economies made possible by efficient production are offset by inefficiency in dis tribution. TJius, mass distribu tion, with a tremendous turnover which permit* of extremely small unit profit on each transaction, is vital to a high standard of liv ing. Ilere again America has at tained world leadership. The chain store industry, dealing in foods, hardware, clothing and other consumers' goods, led the way, and demonstrated conclu sively that large-scale selling would give the oonsumsr more and better goods for leas money? and at the same time beuefit in dustry, agriculture and labor. Independent store* banded to gether in oentral buying organi sations, have followed this plan, have Improved their standards of service to the eo as timer, and have successfully met chain store com petition. CARL T. DURHAM He was nominated by the 6th Congressional Executive Com mittee to fill the place on the Democratic ticket made vacant by the sudden death of Judge Lewis E. Teague on Thursday, Octo ber 27th. He had no political opponent and was duly elected Tuesday, and will represent this district in the next Congress, succeeding Wm. B. Umstead who did "not choose to run." What America needs now is still greater efficiuucy in distribu tion, not leBs. Those agencies which have achieved so much in the past must be encouraged to go ahead and achieve still more in the future. That is the way of progress ? and of bettering the lot of all the people.? I. N. R. To Control Borers A treatment with the new chem ical Ethylene Di-chloride Emul sion, for the control of peach tree borers was demonstrated on the fairn of U. O. Fletcher of Beau fort county by J. O. Bosweli of the State College Extension Ser vice. Fifteen trees were used to teat the new material and records will be kept of the results. Unique? Frozen Strawberries Quick frozen strawberries are now being preserved by chilling them in cold sugar syrup. The agent is sugar soluiiuu kept cold by cooling coils in the freezing container. Timely Farm Questions Answered at State College Question? Can I ;treet m.v cot ton seed with Ceresan and then store _ (hem without injury to the seed. Answer? Yes, the seed can t?e treated at any time during the winter and stored until planting time without injury. When treat ing seed, however, care shoull be taken to IbreatVe as lit Lie of the dust as possible as the chemical Is poisonous both to man and animals. It is pdvi Fable to wear a dry <cloth or dusk ma^k over the moutli end nose wheh treating seed Any seed .treated in excess of the amount needed should be dispos ed of in such a way that animals will not have access to them or saved over pnd planted the fol lowing ,vear. Question? How often should new terrace* be inspected and rebuilt. Answer? Under average conditions ? newly .built terrace will settle ap p-0*imat?ly ptie-foUrt* of it* height Ui a year and it is therefore ne cessary that thev.be inspected shortly after completion. Al^ high place* should be cut out and all low places lifed in on the ridge. Immediately pfter the first rain another inspection should <be made and tBe resultant Irregularities col lected. Do .not wait for the tain to find the fow places, but find them first and correct them be/ore tho rain. Question ? What is mesnt by a full .ration for the dairy fro*. Answer? This feimply means feed ing the animal to her full capa city for tnilk production. In deter mining how much feed to give the animal she is, first of all, jgjven all the tonghage including I hay and silage she will eat. The grain teed is then gradually Increased un til 15 pounds are being fed daily. The milk is weighed carefully each' day and when the animal fails to make a corresponding' in crease in production for ths in crease in grain then she has reached her maximum production and, the grain ration tan be set at that figure.
