THE GLEANER GRAHAM, N. C- AUG. 5. 1943 ISSUED EVERT THURSDAY J. D.KERNODLE, Editor $1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE Entered at flu Poatofflce at Graham, N. C.. ae stM-oud-cl&M matter. THE WAR The post week closed with successes on every front for the Allied armed forces on land, qn sea and in the air. This week's operations are a continuance of last week's per formances. Germany is panicky. Ham burg, perhaps Germany's most important city, has been devas tated, and fear is felt that a like fate impends for other cities. And so the civilian population has been ordered to evacuate, especially that of Berlin. The great oil fields of Ru mania, Germany's chief depend ance for oil and gas, have been blasted and almost put out of commission. The Axis forces are retreating from the Orel sector, which the Nazis held so long against the Russian assaults. Here Germany had massed heavy reinforce ments. but the Reds move on and have recaptured many towns. In the Pacific the Allied for ces have made marked progress. The Japs on the island of Kiska are near blasted off. Down in the Solomons Gen. MacArthur con tinues to sink and cripple Jap ships and blast from the air with a low percentage of losses for the Allied forces. SGT. FISH WITH EIGHT BULLETS FINISHED EIGHT GERMANS A remarkable feat of courage and marksmanship is related of Sgt. Herb Fish of Canon City, Colo., by a fellow Sgt. While charging up Blood Ridge, Sicily, a few days ago, Sgt. Glad relates: "A German shot at Fish and hit him in the helmet. The bullet went through his helmet and lin ing but circled inside and came out the back without even pierc ing his skin. The impact knock ed Herb off his feet, however, and stunned him for a second. "He was lucky to be alive?it was a miracle the bullet didn't kill or seriously injure him?but it made him madder than a wet hen. The German who had ruined his helmet came running out laughing and shotting to the other hidden Germans to come out and see the American he had knocked over. "That gave Fish the br^-V he wanted. Quick a# a oat he rolled over and came ud with h;? Gar and in business position. His first shot droiwd the guv who had put the hole through his hel met. pnrmnno w?w> me guici vjv*n.a?io caught flat-foot too. * began working them over rifle and everv time he nulled the trig ger. down went another German. Tbev scattered and tried to get hack at him but thev were in a oanic and before thev co"H nut a bullet verv *o him Fish had knocked off eight of them. Eight rounds?eight Germons?b o y. that's some plugging. "When he ~nt up there wasn't a German left within rifle range. We had come upon them so auicklv we cau"'' of them with their shoes off. Tliev had been ?,l?eoin<". "One German we cp"*n?ed told us that f'~Ming on Bloodv Ridge was three times worse than anything thev had --?n around Stalingrad." The feat was praised as moat remarkable by the officers. It's fellows such as Sgt. Fish that will win the War. An yam lghtta< mag & ?boot this ? ' Does It mean aaythlac Ml to yarn personal- ?Jm. Dough boys?walking soldiers ?won the race tramping to the outskirts of the citv about noon from the southwest after a 60 mile advance from Castelvetrano during which thev had to halt three times to knock out harass ing artillery pieces. Happy that his forces avoided shelling into submission this citv known throughout the world for its ancient churches. temDles and monuments which make it a living tomb of Phoenician. Greek Byzantine, Saracen, Norman, Spanish and early French civili zations. the American deputy commander under Lieut Gen. George S. Patton, Jr. accepted the surrender. Italian officers, bags packed, had been waiting all dav to hand over the town of from 400,000 to 500,000 population. The Ger mans were out the night before. The harbor area has been heavily damaged by the Allied bombings. The city itself bore the scars of bombs but the dam age is not as extensive as that visited upon a number of other Sicilian towns. Troops who rolled into Paler mo at dusk received a hearty welcome. The populace cheered, threw gifts of flowers and fruit and poured free wine in the greatest demonstration most of them had ever seen. Italian sol diers still in uniform lined the streets by the hundreds and joined in the cheers. Some of them were so glad to be out of the war they even ran out and kissed the hands of the Ameri can soldiers rolling past in half track. Mr. and Mrs. R. E.
