THE GLEANER GRAHAM. N. C., OCT. 7. 1943 ISSUED KVKBT THCHBDAY J. D.KERNODLE, Editor 11.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE But* red at ?iu Poatoffloe at Urabam. J N. c., a* ?H*X)Qd-claaa matter. ANENT THE WAR Within a week's time so much of thinking interest takes place on the world's battle fronts that a small volume would hardly suf-1 fice to give a brief outline. Millions of men are engaged in deadly combat on hundreds of miles of battle fronts. Thous ands of ships are plowing the waters of oceans and seas doing their part in the great drama. Thousands of air craft fly high to drop missiles of death and de struction on towns and cities and munition plants. On the German-Russian battle line stretched across a continent the most active operations are found with the Russians driving . the enemy from their soil, with many miles still to go. American and British armies on the east and west of Italy are driving the German armies out of that country. Leaving Europe for the south west Pacific we find the armies and the sea and aircraft of the United Nations driving the Japs from their island installations with deadly results, like to that of the allies against the Germans in Europe. Everywhere the allied forces are giving a good account of their performances. So well are they doing that predictions persist that the end will come in a few months. Should the end come within a year, it would be a most wonder ful achievement. Alamance Bond Sales Nearly $250,000 Over Quota. L. J. Blackey, chairman of the third war loan drive in Ala mance county and president of the National bank of Burlington discloses that he had received a report from the Fedreal Re serve bank that by October 2, the date of the expiration of the war bond campaign- this county had turned in $3,242,801.25 in war bonds. The county quota was $2,954, 000. Service Center and Canteen Group The center is open from 4 o' clock Saturday afternoon till 10 p. m. Sunday and closed on other days. It provides the men in service a place to sleep, take a bath, read and write letters and rest. The space and facilities are limited so that it would be im possible to provide other enter tainment or serve meals. Private homes here have been generous in providing meals, v A few homes have been offer ed for men coming in during the week, wanting a place to sleep and rest. If there are others they are to notify Miss Mary Cooper or Mrs. E. P. McClure. The community has kindly provided nicely for the comfort of the Center. During the past week-end the Providence Memorial and Gra ham Christian churches furnish ed hosts and hostesses at the center with Mrs. W. H.Holt and Gerard Cates in charge. Enter tainment "*'s furnished to 18 boys. Cigarettes were supplied by Mrs. May Utley and Joseph Jar osz; fruits, by Mr. and Mrs. John B. Stratford, and magazines, by Mrs. J. J. Henderson. , The Friends church will fur nish hosts and hostesses for the coming week-end with Rev. and Mrs. John M. Permar and Mrs. Hurley in charge. The dedication sermon was preached at 11 o'clock by Dr. George Summy of New Orleans, La., who organized a Sunday school there in the early 1880s while he was the pastor of Gra ham Presbyterian church. That was more than 60 years ago. It was fitting that Dr. Summy could be secured to dedicate a church where he had sown the first seed. At the time there was a public school house there for the district school. Ten years later, in May, 1892, a church was organized with 15 members. One of the members is still there and a deacon in the church, and the membership is now over 200. Since the church was organized a community of several hundred has grown up, principally be tween the site and Graham. A small frame building served for a church prior to the ereo tion of the present splendid brick edifice. From the organization till now pastors of the Hawfields and Graham churches have served as ?< ? At present Rev. W. E. Harrop, pastor of the Graham church, is the pastor and has been since 1925. i After the morning service dinner was served on the grounds and a slab inscribed with im portant dates was placed in the wall in an afternoon service. Attending the service were Dr. Donald W. Richardson, who holds the chair of missions at Union Theological seminary, Richmond, and is the present moderator of the general assem blv. and Dr. E. E. Gillespie, su perintendent of home missions **"? Synod of North Carolina. The erection of the new church was begun in the spring of 1940, and is composed of an auditor ium on the first floor, and a basement under the whole church ?*?-' "" "lassrooms, the whole being heated by a steam plant and stoker, and with the con venience of water in the build The estimated value of the property is $25,000 and is free of debt.
