Tho following beautiful sentiments are from Meister Karl's Sketch Hook, entitled the "Night of Heaven." It is full of touchini tenderness: "It is diirk'when the honest and hon orable man seen the results of years swept cruelly away by the knavish, heartl ad versary. It is dark when he feels the clouds of sorrow gather around and knows that the holies and happiness n other axe fadinn with his own. Hut ia that hour the memory of past integrity will be a true consolation, and assure htm eren here on earth of gleams ol luzht in Hea ven. It is dark u hen the dear voice of that sweet child once fondly loved, is no more heard around in murmurs. Dark m hen some well know n air recalls the once oft attun ed bv childish voice now hushed in death ! Darkness ; but onlv the gloom which now heralds the day-spring ef immortality, and the infinite light ot Heaven. Lnglisu and American Mining. There is a great difference between mines and mining in the United States and Great Britain. Jn the latter country "mine ex plosions cause numerous deaths, While in the United States they cause but fewJ The aggregate id Groat Britain during the ten years from 1856 to 18GG was 2,019. This doca not include the loss of life from the recent unfortuuate explosions in York shire and btaflbrdsmre. iJver 600 lives were lost by . these last. It is thought that the great hardships and dangers to the Jtnghsh miners, working in pits eight and nine- hundred feet deep, and the liabili ty of these eiplosions, will induce increas ed emigration on their part to this coun try. They have to work at low wasres in Knland, and in aome mines many of the operatives never come above ground. On account of their great depth, eighty and eighty-four degrees is the temperature at whim it ii said the work in-' certain -parts of some Knslkh mines is now carried on, and at a higher temperature than this men cannot teadily labor. There is nothing of this sort in connec tion with our American mines, the coal here being generally in the hills and high regions.. . Ceal mining, therefore, is per formed at much 'greater advantage iu tkis country than in England. The mines pay better here also. In L-nerland only from three to five per cent, are the profits, and it is thought that much .capital invested in com mining mere, w iu see new ncius oi labor. Our coal and iron mines will thus, from natural causes, draw both laborers and capitalists from Europe. -The skilled English laborers, when here, vlten become capitalists by reason of tho advantages which they und and which their knowle-lgc enables them to avail of. There are mines owned now; in the interior ofl'ennsylvania it is stated, by men who worked them years ago, aud there are banks whose residents formerly were coal miners. Value of Accuracy:. It is the result of everv day's experience that steady at tention to matters of detail lies at the root of human progress, and that diligence, above all it the mother of good luck. Ac curacy is alto of much importance, and an invariable mark of good training in a man accuracy in observation, accuracy iu speech, accuracy in the transaction of af fairs. What is done in business must be w ell done ; lor it is better to accomplish rerf ctly a small amount of work tluiu to lalf do ten times as much.- A w ise man used to say, " Stay a little that we may make an end the sooner." Too little attention, however, is paid to this highly imKrtant quality of accuracy. As a man eminent in practical science lately observed, 44 It is astonishing how few peo ple I have me t in the course of my experi ence who can define a fact accurately." Yet, in bufiness affairs, it is the manner in w hich even small matters are transacted that often decides men for or against you. With virture, capacity and geod conduct in other respects, the person who is habit ually inaccurate cannot be trusted; his work has to be done over again ; and he thus causes mdless annoyance, vexation and trouble. is i Ik ?fi 'Ill HI I n Ill it w . They can m-ver make it right, and all the bankrupt law s iu the m.ivt rse cannot make it right for them not to pay their debts. HelL'ion may be a very comforta ble cloak under w hich te hide-, but if reli gion does not make a man deal justly it is not w.Ttli having. Pictures. A room with pictures in it and a room without pictures, differ about as much as a rtorn w ith windows and a room with windows and a room without windows. Nothing, we tiimx, n more melancholy, particularly, to a person w ho has te pass much time in his room, than bleak walls with nothing on them for pictures are Ieep holes of escape to the soul, leading to other scenes and other spheres. It is such an inexpressible relief to a person engaged in w riting or even readink on leedeing up, not to have his line of vision chopped offbyan" odious white wall, but to find his soul escaping as it were, through the lrame of an ex qu'.Mte picture to other beautiful and per haps heavenly scenes w here the fancy for a moment may revel, relre.-hed and de lighted. Thus pictures are consolers of lonoli i:ess ; they are relief to the jaded mind ; thev arc windows to the impnsouet thought ; they are Wioks ; thev are histo ries ami sermons, which we can read with out the trouble of turning over the leaves JJutrnin'j. Prophecy of Retribution Gloohy Reflection.- The venerable Nathan Lord, D. D., for a third of a century Pres ident of Dartmouth College, New Hamp shire, amid all the political infatuation and religious fanaticism that has surrounded him, and that compelled him finally to surrender the position he hael so long adorned, adheres steadfastly to the princi ples and opinions that he espoused before the insanity that now prevails in h:s sec tion of country had become general. 77te Charleston Mercury of Saturday publish-, es a portion of a private letter by him last month to one of his former pupils, extracts from which we subjoin : " I do not justify, in point of Christian principle or common prudence, the meth ods by which you sought redress of the wrongs you have, tor more than a genera tion, received from the North. But I more blame ourselves, first, for our de nunciation of slavery itself, in distinction from its abuses, and then .for our "irre pressible conflict" with it, undertaken upon false moral and political grounds, aud ear ned on hatefully, as it lias been, after a Mahometan fashion. Were the institution a malum in se, and not some times a con servative necessity for all tne parties, our method of overcoming it has beeu, from first to last, unworthy of a Christiau peo ple.- We have done the work. We have given vou a dreadful punishment. But, as we have done it in unrighteousness, our retribution, somo time, somehow, will come, perhaps to general dissolution. 44 1 et I dare not speculate about the fu ture. w 1 1 old my hands, and wait upon the providence of God. But in the general and in the long run I see no good before us. J udgment will come. "I think thus the rather beecausel seem to see an appproaching catastrophe of all the nations. The world has gro wn old in transgression. From East to West the experiment of reforming and saving it has been tried n vain. e are the western most and last; and now that Christianized, Anglo-Saxon, republican wisdom has fail ed, instead of calling on God for help we are calling upon the negro. We look to a brutified, shiftless and licentious people to aid ns in tho work of self-government, which has been impossible to ourselves, and which I now believe is impossible on earth. The demonstration seems uow almost complete that man can neither govern nor ee governed, nor govern hunselr, and that the last failure will somehow prove the greatest of all. The volcanic throes of the uations t overturn arbitrary power w ill be ultimately successful. Then "lib erty, equality, fraternity," will have its short day ; and when its Babel seem to be completed the dream of earth will vanish. Here all such prophecy ing is vain. I find mysrlf almost alone. I sowetirnes imagine, that I could do more among your people, and even among the outcast, sufY ering and perishing negroes, than among the philanthropists who have given them a boon which they know not how to use, and which these boasters never would have giyen them but to m?ke them subvervicut to their fanatical enterprises or their lust of power. This winter, which ho commenced in Washington with a declaration that he had wasteel much time in being a conservative, and proposed to be a radical, he has been kicked and cuffed almost without ceremony. His greatness, and that of Forney, faded at Harrisburg, and now his pet scheme of an e nabling act for the Southern States has been committed to the Committee on Ro constructiou, and that's an end of it.
