THE DOQUlD QUESTION'1 I .About tins time we hear a great deal jof talk to tjbe effect that the Tanners legislature,'-is afraid to pass a law im posing a tax on dogs -This is not true. This Legislature is not afraid of any thing it wants to do, and no man who knows the men who compose it will so assert. The Legislature is largely coin jposed of farmers and they are; sincerely ;desiroug of promoting the success of the .Sf t n . th -tlnnft, Binw. ftf thpi ;Democratic Party. A good dog on a farm , is a ne cessity, and the ' 'Farmers Legislature does not desire to put a tax unprecedeu: ted in history upon what . the farmers deem so necessary. '.' ; And they are right. 11 The ridicule they are receiving does not come from tne fanners ; who know the real feelings of the farmers of the State. It come chiefly from ' Don Quixote men of humor who ' are unac : quainted with the desires and ' the v tem per of the people. State Chronicle. v-- STATE CONTEMPOUAltlBS. We publish in another colmn Judge Fowl's message to the Legis lature in which he advises that a Commissioner of the Penetentiary with fk salary of $2,500 a yer be abolished. If the Legislature should adopt the Goverdors suggestion U ough either to make Col. Hicks or his successor; the Commissioner. One high ealried officer will be quite .enough to. make the a flairs of tbe penitentiary, with a well naid as i 8isUnt andMuardand other officers flt nrmtTtlh t'hronlcl. . When Judge Boykin was iu the Legislature in '82 he introduced a- bill rt-quiring all criminals, sentenc ed to be hanged to bo executed at the penetentiary. The execution hereon last Tuesday, convinces us that the bill should have becone a law. Hope the present Legislature will place such a law upon the statute. Clinton Caucassion. The next thing I saw in the ; pa pers was a pompous list of mighty Colonels as the Governor person al staff. Gov ernor and Colonels, I though, were running things and matters in gen eral. 1 was thinking about . these thingH in about this way, when an o!d farmer friend nudged me and said: , "Don't you kndw we have a farmer Legislature, and ; they , will look to economy?'? ,;.I said I. could not see everything as he saw it.
