THE FKANKLIN TIMES, f ; ! - - . A. THOMAS, Editor and Projector. HSIJ VEAJi, six months. $1.50 1.00 FRIDAY, July 24. . 1891 T0 Indemnity to Females. Jf gentle woman wants to find out something about herself, she should buy some insurance, such as a traveling man buys when he starts out on a trip, and then meet vith an accident, and see what comes of it. On the back of the insurance ticket is priuted in plain words, "No indemnity to females." go she knows just what to expect ; but as there is reason tor every thing it naturally sets her to thinking. The other day a woman who jostles elbows with the world more or less in pursuit of the es fifty al dollar, set out to discover t .iy her sex was in disrepute as a risk. She consulted three agents ghe put the case fairly and square ly. She marked the diagram with her neatly gloved index finger, and phowed each agent where she sat jn the palace car and where the man sat next to her. She had 43.000 insurance ticket, in her pocket; likewise he. A collision deprived him of an arm and her of two arms. He may collec weekly indemnity, but she gets nothing unless she dies, in which case she gets it or, that is, her heirB set it. The various insur ance men whom she consulted were inclined to ref ix her to the Mede and Persian nature of the compa- py's rules. But she was of an in quiring mind, and she pursued J-hem for a reason. They had nev er given the subject much thought but each advanced his own theo ry. The first one said he believed jt was because a woman was not regarded as such a loss to the com munity as a man. The second one paid he presumed it was because women were so flighty and nerv ous, that in case of an accident she was more apt to fly in the face of danger. On account of lacking the presence of mind she might get under the wheels or into the boiler. The third man allowed that women were most always sick, and if a company began to pay indemnity they would never get well. The women who are leading crusades in the interest of their own sex might do well to consider the points which stand in the way of their being a first-class insurance risk. The Alliance convention which was held at Fort Worth, Texas, a few days since, planted itself gquarely against the sub-treasury and land loan schemes, ownership of railroads, telegraphs, &c, by the Government, and passed a res olution denouncing these schemes as a violation of the first princi ples of good government, paternal in their character and, centralizing jn their tendencies, the result of which would be if enacted into law to foster such a horde of Gov ernment officers and dependents upon the people that the voice of the people could no longer be heard m the control of governmen tal affairs. The resolution also demands the removal from Nation al and State offices of the order of those men who are not farmers and that their places be filled by men who are identified in interest with the farmers. It appeals to the Alliance men throughout the country to come to the rescue of the order, to save it from ruin and disgrace, and recommends' the holding of a national convention to this end at bt.
