THE FK AN KLIN TIMES J. A. THOMAS, Editor and Proprietor. E. F. TA KB OR 0 U Gil, Associate Ed. ONE YEAIt, BIX MONTHS, $1.50 75 Friday. July 3, - - - 1896. DEMOCRATIC NOMINEES. For Governor. Cyrus B. Watson, of Forsytb. For Lieutenant Governor. . -Thomaj W. Mason, Northampton. For Secretary of State. CHARLES M. Cooke, of Franklin. For State Treasurer. B. F. Aycock, of Wavne. For State Auditor. Robert M. Fdrman, of Buncombe. Snperindeut of Public Instruction. Jno. C. Scarborough, of Johnston. For Attorney General. F. I. Osborne, of Mecklenburg. For Associate Justices of the Su preme Court. A. C. Avery of Burke, George H. Brown of Beaufort. PLEASES EVERYBODY. The ticket nominated by the Tiomnrratic State Convention at Rgleigb last week, seems, not only to please the Democrats, but many Republicans all over the State, flflrlnre that while thev will vote for McKinley for President tbey will support the Democratic State ticket, in preference to voting for Russell and his gang. It should be indeed gratifying to all lovers of good and honest government that the Domocrats have placed such representative and honorable men before the people. No man who loves his State and who desires that the af fairs of the State shall be in the hands of honest and s:ncere men can afford to vote against the tick et headed by thit good and con scientious man, Cyrus B. Watson. MORE BUSINESS AND LESS POLI TICS. Tbey tell us this is to be a strict ly business campaign and tbe "spell-binders" will have to es chew sentiment. That's good. T r -If VCk o Vmilm Tinco n o rr r- o i rrn more business than politics; that is, not politics interfere with busi ness. WANTS THE SCHOLL LAW CHANGED Tbe North Carolina Teacher's assembly declares for an altera tion of tbe present school law, by which there shall be a Special Board of Education for each conn ty, and also that the State shall be divided into educational districts of from two to six counties, each of these to have a district examin er and superintendent, whose sal ery shall be 4 per cent, of tbe Bchoolfundof such district. There is a widespread demand ior a ? 3 .1 1 1l change of the present law. John D. Rockefellow, president 01 xne oianaara 011 trust, owns 400.000 of the 1.000.000 shares in the corporation, and their market value is said to be $1,000,000. His income from this source alone is is $1,328, for every hour of the day, and his annual income from all sources is estimated at from $35 000.000 to $40,000,000. In this issue we lav before our readers the Democratic State plat- t Tt , ii. form. It is oulspoken and plain 1 A Tl J iu its expressions. 11 striKes ns that it is broad enough and strong enough for every man to stand upon who desires the greatest good to the greatest number and good home government. The platform speaks for itself in no uncertain, wobbly sound. viruvistiiNUtt vjAKii nas issued a i . - . 1 . t proclamation in regard to tbe quar antine of cattle in certain coun ties in western North Carolina. The government at Washington had quarantined against Texas or Southern fever in cattle which vorked great hardship on market ing North Carolina cattle, and the Gov. got secretary Morton to modi- ty tne order so as to allow cattle chipped for market, but the Gov. warns tbe quarantined district not to ship cattle into the fected districts." unm- Uongressman Shafforth, of Colorado, who stands by Teller, says McKinley cannot carry a single State west of tbe Mississip pi river. Thb Legislature of Ohio passed a law makiug every Saturday af ternoon a half holiday in muni cipalities having a population of fifty .thoasaDd or ; more, DEMOCRATIC DUTY. As the Charlotte Democrat says, the election of Daniel L.Russell to the governorship of ''this state would be the greatest calamity that has ever befallen the state. The days of reconstruction were not a ci recti instance compared to what his election vyould mean now. In the days of reconstruction the state had been devastated and our institutions were just beginning to shake off the burdens that the war'bad left on them. Then we had nothing to destroy. But any one who remembers the bonds that were issued just for a mere song, he will have an idea of what such men as Mr. Russell would not be too good to do. We now have many nourishing institutions and they are in the hands of good' men but bow long would they be if Russell were at the head of affairs? He would pull down the heads of our institutions of learning, insti tutions for the care of the insane and there are other institutions that would suffer. Will the voters of North Carolina allow it? Will they dare submit to rule of a ty rant? There is danger of it and now is the time to begin to crush the possible calamity. The para mount duty of every true Demo crat in this state is to do all that he can to avert the election of Rus sell. It can be done and will be done if the Democrats will fight, as tbey are wont to fight in the face of such dangers. Hundreds of men should be converted to the cause 01 JJemocracy. DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM. The Principles Set Forth by the State Convention atRaleigh Thursday. Whereas, the Democratic party had its. birth iu Mr. Jefferson's great contest agaiust the centrali zation of tbe powers of the Federal government, and in behalf of the strict construction of the Federal Constitution embodied iu the teuth amendment thereto, in which ill powers not delegated to it were expreesly reserved to the btates, respectively, or to tbe people; and whereas, the Republican party has ever been the party of centraliza tion, resolved, 1. I bat we appeal to the people to observethis fundamental differ ence between the Democratic party and its traditional enemy in res pect to the powers of tbe central government. 2. That tbe Constitution of the United States recognizes both gold ana silver as toe primary or re- 1 1 1 demntion money of these States. and that, in the words of the Na i. " tional Democratic platform of 1884, 'We believe in honest money, the gold and silver coinage of tbe Con stitution, and a circulating me aium couveriiDie into sucn money 1 without loss.1' 3. We favor, indenendentlv of other nations, the free and unlim ited coinage of silver aud gold, a ml without discrimination against either, at the preseut legal ratio of lr to 1, and we condemn the sys tem which in a time of Deace. with millions of silver bullion ly ing idle in the Treasuary, has forced the government within the short period of two years to issue $292,000,000 of bonds, entailing this enormous debt upon the peo ple, in order to maintain its credit upon a siugle standard and a gold basis. 4. We condemn the actiou of tbe Secretary of the Treasuary in fol- towing the Republican precedent of paying the obligations of the Government in gold- which were specifically made pa'able in coin. o. We hereby instruct our dele gates to the NatiorTal convention, both as to platform and candidates, to advocate and vote as a uuit, un flinchingly and at all bazared, for the restoration of silver, aud other wise in obedience to tbe letter aud spirit of the principles herein enunciated. We further instruct our dele gates, States and district, to use all their efforts to abrogate the two-thirds rule, if necessary to secure the nomination of a candi date in complete, in hearty, and in known accord with tbe princi ples herein enuueiated by us. 6. We warn the people against the threatened combined evils of the gold standard and the McKin ley Tariff. These twin monsters go hand iu band in their mission of destruction, drawing the very sus tenance from the body of the peo ple, and concentrating all wealth aud power in the hands of a few. 7. ' We denounce the McKinley Tariff and all other forma of pro tective tariff legislation, and favor tbe constitutional tariff for reve nue only. 8. We favor tbe xepeal of tbe unconstitutional tax of ten per ent. on State banks of issue. 9. We declare ourselves in favor of a graduated income tax in or der that wealth may bear its due propartion of tbe burden of sup porting the government, and we fawr &n immediate amendment of the Constitution of- the United States authorizing its levy and collection in express terms, leaving nothing for judicial construction. 10. We are unalterably opposed to legislation by which monopolies and trusts are created and foster ed. We insist upon the faithful execution of the existing laws against the same, and upon such further legislation as may be neces sary for their suppression. 11. We point with pride to the economic and stainless administra tion of the State government when ever Democracy has been in power. 12. We favor the enactment of such an election law as will secure the purity of the ballot and for the maintenance and protection of the right of suffrage to all the citizens of the State. 13. We favor the continuance of the system of public education es tablished by the Democratic party, and pledge ourselves to its in creased efficiency as the condition 01 the people and public revenues may justify. 14. We favor the prompt, impar tial and just administration of the criminal law of the State, and point with pride to the fact that a Democratic legislature first enact ed a law against lynchiug, and that the faithful execution of the same has virtually suppressed that crime in the State. We cordially invite all men, re gardless of former political associa tions, to unite with us, in a fight to the finish for free silver, for low taxes, for higher prices far agricultural products, for the eco nomical administration of govern ment, and for the freedom and in dividual sovereignty of the Amer ican citizen. We declare our belief that the peace, prosperity and happiness of the people of North Carolina de pend on the defeat of the Repub lican State ticket in the coming election. Marvelous Results. From a letter w.itten by Rev. J. (iuuJer man, of Dimondale, Mich., we are permitted to make extract: "I have no hesitation in recommendiue Pr. King's Xew discovery, as the results were almost marvelous in the case of my wife. While I was pastor of the Baptist Church at Rives Junction she was brough down with Pneumouia succeeeinsr La (irippe. Terrible paroxysms of coughing would last hours with little interruption and it seemed &s if she could not survive them. A friend recommended Dr. King's New Discov ery: it was quick in its work and highly sat isfactory in results." Trial bottles fre at Aycocke& Co's Drug Store. Regular size oqc. and $1.00.
