The following -tribute was taken from the editorial column of theNews and Observer of August 26th. In the passing awav of Editor J. A. Thomas, of Louisburg, the State haslost one of its most loyal and patriotic sons, a distinct loss to his church, his country, his profesbion and to his community, besides that other keen heart breaking loss whjch comes to those of his own familv cir cle. Editor Thomas, for it is as the editor of the Feanklin Times that he became a power of uplift to his town, his county and his section, was a man who did not spare himself, his time or his means when it came to the question of helping others. He was a big hearted man, loyal and true to every interest, broad-minded and level -headed, a staunch friend and valued adviser. There was a hard struggle made to save his life, but his disease went beyond the help of medical skill and he was called hence. In his town and county there is deep grief among all classes, for he had won a place in the hearts of his people, a christian gentleman ever ready to lend a "help ing hand and to give support to a good cause. His people had honor ed himjor three times hj had been a town commissioner, four times the mayor of Louisburg, and for three lerms the treasurer of Franklin county, tilling every position with credit and honor to himself and to the peopje. , ft s a party leader of the Democ racv Mr Thomas stood as one of its best and truest members. In times of conflict he was a champion ot its measures and of its principles. For fifteen years the chairman of the County Democratic Executive Com mittee, for years a member of the Congressional and State executive committees and a delegate tovthe National Democratic Convention, his influence was strong. At t.h i-t State Convention he was continued as a member of the .Central Executive Committee, his services proving al ways of value to the Democratic party. As a newspaper-man "he had made, the Franklin Times a power in his county and section, one of the ablest of the exponents of Democra cy and one of the best cpuntv papers, having been its owner and editor for thirty years. His co-laborers of the State press, recognizing 'his worthelected him as President of the State Press Association, a po Bition which Ire' held in 19ii8.i ono His death is a loss to the editorial I auiubb oi me otate.
