DEATH OF GOVERNOR JOHN
SON. The announcement yesterday of
the denth of Governor Johnson, of
Minnesota,-ivill bring sorrow to a
great many people and universal re
gret thoroushoat the land. While it
was known tor several days that he
was desperately ill with chances for
recovery extremely few the v rally
which he made last Saturday
brought a ray of hope that he might
be victorious in the heroic strug
gle he was making against death
He held his own on Sunday, which
fact gave additional hope, Bu
when it wa learned that he, had tak
en a turn for the worse that evening
all knew there was .hardly any possibil
ity of recovery and in sorrow awaited
announcement of the sad, yet hoped
against hope so reluctant were those
men who knew hi.a only by reputa
tioa as a statesman and valuable
State official to see such a man cut
down in the midst of a eareer which
had brought such honors to . himself
and promised so much of good to his
State and to the nation. .
Governor Johnson was a remark
able man.' He had a tremendous
hold on the esteem and affections of
the people of his State and section
of the country, won by honest in
public and private life and ability as
omcial and party leader. - Sis popu
larity was manifested by the fact
that time and again he was elected
Governor as a Democrat vnot with
standing his State was overwhelm-
s ingly , Republican. His well-earned
reputation for ability and " worth
was as broad as the confines of the
. nation and was - such that ; a large
