Johnson "The Hiker" and guinea pig monk passed through our town last Saturday. He started trom Topeks, Kansas, Nov. On this trip the capitol of Avery State will be visited and a total distance of 16,500 miles will be covered. Besides making the trip in tbe required time, he must return with the guinea pig ? -lead or alive. Tbe pig is about tbe size of a rat. He is prohibited from selling anything, using any lodge influence or askiag tor anything, but is at lib erty to accept anv'd'onation anyone makes. He received six or eight dollars here donated by the people. ? An officer of .the State Prison at Raleigh came down on 38 last Saturday and returned on 41 taking with him Reuben Coombs a young white man, who escaped from the prison on Msreh 25th. It had been reported to the prison ' authorities that Coombs, tJias Henry Pearce, was here and the officer came pre pared to take him baek. Coombs is a boat 18 years old and was sent op from Iredell county last fall to serve 30 years tor murdering his wife. He made his escape on March 25 com ing here and working with Mr. L H. Kearney first then the cotton mill. He does not seem to be a bad fellow at all and whils staying here attended Sand ay school and church regularly. He talked freely, deny ing that be killed his wife.
