Powell, a lawyer of thla city, died this
morning at bis home here, after a%.
Illness or three weeks, of typholl
fewer. Dr. Powell waa a native of this
community; his ancesters having lived
here for generation?. His father was
for a boat IB years sheriff of this ooen
ty. He was of the age of thirty-seven
years, and had been a member of the
bar, In successful and active practice
for about fourteen yean; was edu
cated at Trinity College and the Uni
versity Law School; he was a member
verslty Law School; he waa a member
1 of the State Senate; In the year 1M9.
and served (Or some time aa Mayor of
Henderson, and alee as recorder of the
-criminal court. He was very popular
and highly regarded by all; hte death
Will be learned of with cquch regret
by'all classes.

"daughter of Mr. and Mrs George B.
Harris of thla city, and one child,

The funeral will take place tomor
Ww afternoon at S o'clock, and will

Meeting of the bar and the coun
ty ofllcers were held In the court
house this morning to take steps In
connection with the funeral and a
committee was appointed to prepare
resolutions to he presented to an ad
journed meeting.
Mr. Powell was a member of the
K. of P.. and possibly of other frater
nal organisations.

ternoon at his home at Murfreeeboro,
Tenn.

Major Richardson was horn In
Rutherford county, Tenn. and when

erate army as a private In the Forty
flfth Taaneesee Infantry, serving later
for three years as adjutant of that
regiment Afer the war he prac
ticed- taw at Murfreesboro and was
elected speaker of the Tennessee
House of Representatives when 2S

the State Senate.
Re was elected to the Forty-ninth
Congress from the Fifth District of
Tennessee and served IS consecutive
years, being leader of the Democratic
minority when he refused another

1900 and at the next session of the
Sapreme Council was elected Sover
eign Grand Commander for life.

Mr. R. T. Gupton whose death was
reported in these columns some weeks
ago.
I reached home from a great meet
ing at Hebron church, Hernando
county, Fl*., today at 12 o'clock, and
found a letter awaiting me with the
Information that my best earthly
friend, R. T. Gupton, of Naylor, Ga
was no more on earth. His daughter
wrote me that he had passed away on
June 27th from the effects of a sun
stroke- I here wept till It seems I can
weep no more. "Bob" Gupton dead!
No, It Is not true. He was a child of
God.
I was Intimately associated with
him as his pastor for three happy
years. He was one of God's noblemen.
Truly a prince In Israel has fallen.
He was a deacon of NayU r Baptist
church from its constitution, was su
perintendent of the Sunday-school
-:!C there, but was co modest
that he never would superintend
when his pastor was present. He
was always faithful In his attend
ance upon all the services of his
church, Including the prayer jneet
. ing?notwithstanding the claims of
his large earlier yean he led a stor
my life.
In 1911 he waa genuinely convert
ed and saved, uniting with the
church very soon afterward. With
fiery nature, he waa the finest exam
ple I have ever seen at the power of
God's almighty grace to snbdue the
unruly passions of the human heart.
Meek, childlike in faith, gentle as a
woman, yet-fearless as a lion in op
posing wrong standing for the faith

time, his all was on the altar of his

stood by his pastor with more than a
