CRUDE THOUGHTS FROM THE EDITORIAL PEN
Motheri In Sickness.
We thick the moat pathetic passage
In the bible la the description of the
lad who went out to the harvest field
o fShunen and got sunstruck?throw
ing hla hand on his temple and cry
ing out, 'Oh, my .head, my head!" and
they said, "Carry him to his mother."
And then the record la "He sat on her
knees till noon and then died." It
is an awtul thing to be 111 away from
home In a strange hotel, once In a
while men coming to look at you hold
ing their hands over their mouth for
fear that they will catch the conta
gion. How roughly they turn you In
bed! How loudly the^ talk! How
you long for the ministries ot home!
We knew one such who went away
from one of the brightest ot- homes
for several weeks' business absence at
the Wast A telegram came at mid
night that he was on his death bed,
train the wife and daughter went
westward, but they went too late. He
feared not to die,' but he was in agony
to live until his family got there. He
tried & lttle while longer. He said
"I am willing to die but not-alone."
But the pulse fluttered, the eyes closed
and the heart stopped. The express
train met In the-midnight?wife and
daughters going westward?lifeless
remains ot husband and father com
ing eastward. Oh, It was a sad, pitiful,
overwhelming spectacle. When we
are sick, we want to be sick at home
When the Ume comes for ub to die, we
want to die at home. The room may be
humble, and the faces that look Into
ours may be very plain, but who cares
for that? Loving hands to bath the
temples. Loving voices to-apeak good
cheer. Loving lips to read the com
forting promises of Jesus.
Kutual Klndnefls.
' Kindness, as well as politeness, may
be rlghatful named as the lubricators
of society. As Impoliteness, either
1? old or young persons, male or fe
male, la sometimes painful and always
unpleasant; bo we may say of uil
klndness, that it la a sore spot, a fric
tion, a dreadful fault, to ever be avoid
ed. Kindness always Irritation, soothes
trouble, helps the needy, encourages
the dull and dlacoufaged, sweetens
the home, unifies the church and .ou
nobles socfety. A kind word. 1? ike
apples of gold In pictures of silver
Many a hot temper has been cooled
down by kind words. Many a threat
ened quarrel and fight has been set
tled In peace by klndnesB. Many a
divided and distracted church, or oth
er organization has quieted down and
reunited by kind counsels, and kind
acts. Many an ugly faction has died
a natural ileum by the kindly admin
istrations of kindness. Many a wretch
ed and dlstractd home has been
brought to conditions of peace and Joy
by the mellowing of influences of kind
words and deeds. Hearts without
number, burdened and aching from Ill
treatment have been relieved and
blessed by kindness. Other hearts
polBoned by jealousy and selfishness,
passion and pride have been sweet
ened and purified by the cultivation
of kindly feelings and thoughts. Kind
ness, to be thorough and effective
must be reciprocal as well as receiv
able. i
Whoever would that all others
should be kind to them, must them
selves be kind to all others; on the
principle that be that would have
friends must show himself friendly.
Klhdness may be misplaced some
times ; but that Is the exception, ?n<f
not true. They who cultqlvate and
practice kindness feel wonderful bet
ter than those who Indulge in bitter
ness and ill temper.
Parents should remember that every
distressing blood-curdling story told
to A young child, every superstitious
fear Instilled Into his young life, the
mental attitude they bear towards him
the whole treatment they accord him,
are making phonographic records In
his nature- which will be reproduced
with scientific exactness in hi* future
Ute.
Do you treat your child with as
much respect as you treat friends?
Example Is stronger than precept, and
If you treat him with respect he will
respect himself. Do you provide
amusement for your children at
home? If not they will Beek them
elsewhere. . Provide them with good
literature, but be careful not to place
within their reach the life history of
an outlaw. Help your children with
their games and their studies; be kind
yet firm^%nd though your home has
been a rude log cabin, the children
will not stray from the place where
love dwells.
"Home's not merely four square
walls,
Though hung with pictures nicely
gilded;
Home Is where affection calls,
filled with the shrines the heart has
butlded."
A true husband will receive his
wife into the, most condlng partner
ship. Woman is neither superior nor
inferior to man. She Is only different
A man may have a professional secret
from his wife, but never a personal
secret. It is well to confide to wives
business matters. Woman has an in
stinct at times superior to man's rea
son. ?
