Again sorrow has come in the home. On May 7th. 1915". early in the morn ing the Lord called from earth to heaven the loving spirit of little May Collins. She was only six-months and fourteen days old at her death. Lit tle May was a bright and healthy child up until a few days before the last. She suffered twenty-one days. All that loving hands could do was done, but nothing availed. Her stay on earth was short, but was a joy to all. May was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Collins, tfie latter of whom died a few months ago. We hope that our loss is her eternal gain*. Her. remains were tenderly laid to rest in tho family burying ground on Saturday evening in the presence of a number of friends. Rev. W. II. Collins conducted a short and appro-1 priate service, and many flowers were brought by those who loved her. PLEASANTS. TOWNS MAfft .IMPROVE. /y. n KNTS. m . Health I* Jot Id Dollar? _ . fend Cents. Old Fort and Hertford are the next North Carolina towns^to make notable municipal Improvements. Old Port the main gateway to the mountains proper, with a population of not over 1000, has contracted for a sanitary -sewer system to cost around $10,000. Hertford, the quaint old town on the Perquimans, lias gone two farther. She has contracted for waterworks, electric lighting and a sanitary sewer system,, together with street improve ments on specified streets. Hertford . is a town of about 2,000 people, some 60 percent of which are negroes. The lowest figures for Hertford's improve ments, not to include street improve ment, will be about $55,000. The small town of 1,000 or more I inhabitants are today making the | municipal improvements that towns of 45,000 or 20,000 inhabitants made just a few years'ago. Regardless of war times these towns feel that they can not afford, to make these principal safeguards In defense of health an:l safety. It Is an encouraging sign [when small towns realize that they i must provide "safety first" for th*ir I people, regardless of the money cost. Typhoid fever used to be a tim*. killer. Now the efficiency experts have knocked it clean out of the box. In the army, navy and elsewhere, where men are off duty or laid in a hospit al at the employers' expense, care ful records of the loss of time on ac count of various causes were kept. For six years prior to the introduc tion or' anti-typhoid vaccine * in?the army in 1910, our soldiers lost time on account of sickness from typhoid at the rate of over 71 days every year for an army of 100,000. In 1910, when anti-typhoid vac In at? or. was offered the soldiers if the;* < aroJ to lake it, enough of them took it to reduce this dally loss of time leave in the army from 71 to 49. In March, 1911, anti typhoid vaccination became compul sory and for that year the rate was still further reduced from 49 to 20. (New Jer?ey) Charlotte, N. C. Norfolk, V*. (BALTIMORE) Charleston, W. Va. Richmond, Va. Charleston, S. C. 1912, with vaccination compulsory, the sick leave from typhoid dropped to S days per 100,000 soldiers and in 1913 to one-third of a day. In other words, by applying the efficiency idea, the time loss in our army from typhoid was reduced from 71 days to one-third of a day. Since our typhoid fever deaths rate in North Carolina is over twice what it used to be in the army, our loss is doubtless correspondingly high. What an opportunity for efficiency! Will we take It? In a number of countriea plans are being made to offer the vaccination free to all whd~Wttt~TSke it. ~ Only One Entirely Satisfactory.
