"German Efficiency." Occasionally we still hear reference to the much wafted "German efficien cy." These references, come mostly fiuiu ?Ui*fifaijflaiUiem-<>German sym pathizers or from throw a fit whenever "this dreadful war" is mentioned. People of intelli gence have long ago learned to esti mate this efficiency* at its true value, and have ceased to stand in awe of it. The efficiency of Germany Is pure ly an efficiency of constant applica-1 tion. Her present militant condition Is the> result of a lifetime of unremit ting attention to every conceivable an gle of the game of war. While the other nations of the earth were quiet ly jnirsuing the paths of peace, Ger many was straining every nerve and devoting all her accumulations of men and means to the task of creating an arm:* and armament before which the world would find It impossible- to stand. During nlost of this time she was hypocritically participating in the Hague conferences and proposing the total disarmament of all nations, but in the light of recent developments we know that during all this discus sion her war preparations were never slackened. Even Germany's efficiency in the arts and sciences has been made to serve the dread Moloch of War. In ex tending her influence among the na tions of the earth in these branches, she has been for years building "spher es of influence"?in other words, nests of spies and potential traitors against the day when their services should be needed by the fatherland. Yes. Germany has efficiency?; Efficiency in cold-blooded assassina tion, evidenced by the brutal destruc tion of vessels by her sea vipers, when even women and children attempting to escape in open boats have been shel led. mangled and sunk; evidenced by l:cr wanton destruction of civilian life t.y her airplanes and Zeppelins; evi ilc.'.red by the deliberate murder of pn-':~.ers of war who, by all the laws of r.ailons, chould have received hon orable and humane treatment. Efficiency in perfidy, as witnessed In her mp- of Belgium, for no other rea son than that she stood betwean r. bru tal tyrant and his intended victim; evi denced by her attempt to array other nations against our own country,_ at the same time her repre3entatlves_io our capital was shedding crocodile tears over . his forced departure and separation from his "dear friends in America"?doubtless he took with him for the perusal of his butcher master full proofs of his treachery while en joying our hospitality and esteem. The Germany of other days was no ted for efficiency, but that efficiency has been prostituted to most ignoble ends. God save us from such efficiency. of Despondency. Despondency is often caused by in digestion and constipation, and quivk aE"" Ig'? strengthen tiie digestion and move the bowels.
