V_d. ?p?M DtFrank Crane Saysl The Bight Klrfd of Patriotism Jk patriotic deed Is one that reflects honor and glory upon ones country. We recognize General Grant, the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon ai patriots because they led armed fore, as of their respective countries. The exploits of Colonel Lindbergh together with that of Chamberiln and Levlne, have glorified the 'United States. But this glory was not off set by any rancor occurred by other i countries. Prance and Germany were Just as enthusiastic in acclaiming the exploits of our fliers as we were. This Is the right kind of patriotism and patriotic action, for it is one which exalts one's native country and at the same time 4o? net iwskw animosity in other peoples. Undoubtedly Thomas Edison has glorified his own country quite as much as General Grant On a vote taken In Prance recently the most po pular Frenchman was found to be not Napoleon, hut Louis Pasteur. ?n n?rw)n unit jenner have done more to exalt the prestige of England Drake and Wellington. Koch and Goethe have spread the fame of Germany tar more than Von t .1 Noltke ?&d Ludenburg, and Marconi and Beiaucha have made Italy famgus and are entitled to the gratitude ot their country quite aa much aa Oarl haldl. Tolstoy lias done more to apread the renown of Ruaala than all her war riors. This throws a welcome light on tree patriotism which la found in that harmless rivalry of achievement by the members ot various national groups. There Is no bad blood In this com petition. There is nothing gained for one country which is not equally valu able for the whole world. We are learning that to be a good national is to be a good world cltisen, and the annlauae of mankind la aplte as valuable as the aplauae of oae's fellow cltisens. In rrder to elevate our country and to magnify It, It la no longer necessary to go out and kill somebody to annex some other territory; it is better to do something that shall excite both the emulation and the applause of the whole world. ? - True patriotism consists In making our country stronger and better and not necessarily belittling another coun try. to spend the Christmas holidays with NUUTH ST friends. ? m ?The grade mothers and teachers of the- graded school gave a treat to ailthe children Tuesday in the shape of candy, nuts and fruit. * ? * ^ ?We extend our thanks to Messrs. L. P. Hicks and J. P. Timberlake for a lot of nice sausage and spare ribs.
