Maxwell, State Commissioner of Revenue, In the race for member of the Interstate Commerce Commission, to succeed Commissioner Taylor, of Alabama, whose term expires about the first of the year, A Southern Democrat is to be selected by the president and Mr. Maxwell is strongly endorsed by members of his own par ty in North Carolina and by many leading Republicans of the State. It is freely predicted that he stands an excellent chance of being appointed, In which event Governor Gardner would be called typon to name a new Commissioner of Revenue. For the latter post the name of former State Senator A. E. Woltz, of Gastonla, is being discussed in political circles here. He has long been an ardent Cardner supporter, has a creditable record as a financier and public of ficial behind him and his friends be lieve would measure up to the re quirements of Revenue Commissioner in a handsome way. The pardon mill is not at all ac tive these days due to the absence of Jigdge Townsend, pardon commission^ cr, who Is trying to help settle the labor troubles at Marlon. Prices o[ tobacco on Eastern North Carolina markets during the week have been heartening to growers and a more hopeful note is generally heard over that seqtlon of the State. Combined monthly statements of the State Treasurer and Auditor re cently made public show a cash bal ance in the general fund on Septem ber 30 of 12,565.681.70 and in the high way fund $5,922,966.65. Total indebt edness of the State at that time was placed at $174,792,600. Receipts for the fiscal year for the general fund total $4,925,896.61 and for the high way fund for the same period $5,922. 996. The State Highway Commission re cently opened bids on projects involv ing the constrijction of twelve pro jects in eleven counties of the State In which around three-quarters of a million dollars will be expended. The projects include hard surface high way Jobs, improved earth type roads, fn overhead crossing and one bridge. The Supreme Court holds, in an opinion written by Justice Connor, that the National Bank of Greenville was liable for the amount of $359.03 paid out on a tobacco check present ed by a party other than the one to contended that it was customary tor the tobacco cheoks, although made to definite payee, to go through as though made to bearer. Commissioner of Agriculture Wm. A. Graham has decided on a tour of the State in company with seed au thorities from the Federal Govern ment in hope of preventing the fur ther practice of the distribution of spurious seed which, it is said, has been foisted on the public by unscru pulous dealers. The Gardner slogan is pure bred seed and to make this a f>ct rather than a theory it Is pro posed to use more than a pound of cure. Fisheries officials of the State re port the annual production of oysters to be approximately 560,000 bushels and an increased demand for all sea food products. The"season for speck led trout, tray trout, croakers, spots, flounders, corned herring, sea-bass, drum, bluefish, mackerel, mullqts. and shrimp has also opened and is wel comed by consumers throughout North Carolina. Top dressing corn with nitrate of soda gave an increased yield of 23 bushels an acre as compared with -where no such top-dressing was made in a demonstration conducted by E. J. Eaton of Yadkin County. An income of $300 from one-half acre of land planted to ontons and Banish cabbage is the record of S. J. Hughes of Avery County.
