Tubercular Clinic During the week of July 6th Dr. Paplneau, a specialist from the North Carolina Sanatorium, will hold a Tuberculosis clinic in Louisburg. Recent improvements in the lluoroscope have made It possible by fluoroscopic examination to detect practically all tuberculous lung lesions of clinical signific ance. Dr. Paplneau will have with him a fluoroscope which will be used in this clinic and will en able him to examine patients more quickly and more accurate ly than by physical examination alone. All contacts and those who have suspicious symptoms of Tuberculosis should come to this clinic. It will be absolutely necessary to make an engagement for exa mination at this clinic as every hour is expected to be filled. Come to the Health Office as early as possible and make an engage ment. A case of small pox has been reported from Franklinton town ship. Vacinatlon is recommended1 for all. t t t Pulmonary Tuberculosis Pulmonary Tuberculosis, or Consumption as it is frequently called, is a germ borne contagious disease. It is believed (by many of the1 laity) to be hereditary, but this is not true. Statistics show no in fection at birth. At the age of two ' ten (10) per cent show signs of' tuberculosis Infection, at four 26 to 30 per cent, at from 5 to ten 50 per cent, at 15 between 60 and 75 per cent. Statistics show nine out of ten adults in this country have been infected with Tuber culosis. The vast majority never become diseased. Infection and disease. Between infection and disease there is a very definite distinction. Tuber culosis Infection means that the germs are present in the body, without giving any manifestation of the disease. Tuberculosis disease means that the germs have found a chance to grow in the body, to produce poisons to destroy the tissues of, the lungs, thus frequently pro ducing well known symptoms. Tests show that most adults are infected with tuberculosis, as a rule not more than two in every one hundred develop tuberculosis disease. Resistance : Everyone has a normal wall of resistance against disease, and especially against tuberculosis. When tubercular germs enter the body of a person the natural defenses of the body become engaged in walling off the intruding germs, this prevents them from causing evidences of the disease. The person is said to be infected, and whether he ever becomes diseased depends en tirely whether this defense wall holds. Imprisoned behind the wall the germs are harmless and may remain so for years. But the tub ercular germ Itself has peculiar powers of resistance, and if the wall breaks It seises it's chance. The break down of the resisting wall is due to two sets of cause* ? environment and personal. Among environment, some of the causes are bad housing and living con ditions, insanitary surroundings, lack of medical and hospital faci lities. Personal causes that break down resistance include contribut ing diseases, such as influenza, measles or scarlet fever, lack of proper food, worry, faulty habits of cleanliness, diet and exercise. Symptoms of Tuberculosis: Symptoms of tuberculosis are of two kinds, local and constitution al. Local symptoms are due to de finite changes in the lung tissue caused by the growth of- the tubercular germ. Constitutional symptoms are due to entrance in the blood stream of products from the diseased area, cough and ex pectoration, a continued tired feeling, hoarseness, fever, rapid pulse, chills, loss of strength and appetite. All these are warning signals. The person who has a cough frequently falls to consult his physician because his trouble t^jseems to him nothing more than "a bronchial cold. To be on the safe side a physician should be consulted when a cold lasts over six weeks. Statistics show that for every death from tuberculosis there are nine active cases and nine arrest- 1 ed cases. Infection: To contract pulmon ary tuberculosis, there must be contact with a person having the disease or an inhalation of the germs, as the result of careless expectoration of such a person. By using food or drinking uten sils, towels, napkins, bed clothes and other things used by a tuber cular person. Kissing by a tuber cular person should be avoided. Some of the many rules to avoid disseminating tuberculosis: A patient who has tuberculosis should it possible go to a sana torium, If unable to do this a special room should be built for the patient. The tubercular pati ent should sleep in a room to himself, have separate bed clothes which should be laundred separ Awarded Gold Medal NEW YORK . . . Owen 0. Soil Conservation Program The Soil Conservation Program for Franklin County li progress ing very nicely at the present Lime. There have been quite a [ew misunderstandings among {he Farmers aa to what it all means. A great many people thought that If they signed the work sheets that they would be limited to a certain number of acres o t cot ton and tobacco to plant and a certain number of pounds to sell, ilmliar to the old A.A.A. This, is most of us know, Is an error. Letters have been written from the County Agent's office to each ?nd every farmer who has not signed a work sheet, attempting to explain to growers just what the program means; that he was under no obligation in filling out the work sheet; that the informa tion called for on the work sheet was for the actual number of ' teres planted on the farm for the rear 1935 to the various crop*, ?nd the average for the different crops before the A.A.A. program started. There Is not one word on the work sheet as to what is to' tie planted this year. The biggest thing about the work sheet is to Mtabllsh bases for other crops, luch as corn, potatoes, wheat, oats, vegetable crops, and legume crops, and the purpose of this tsi to establish adequate bases on every farm that has been cultivat ed since 1930, and bases for crops adequate for the personnel of the farm. Of course in cases where a person has bought a farm that haa not been farmed since 1930, and haa bought it for the purpose of making a living and not tor speculation, it is the desire of the program to establish bases of the different crops suitable for that particular land. Cypress Creek Township at the present time Is leading the coanty in the percentage of work sheets filled out. I am listing below the names of the townships and the number of work sheets filled out and the percentage of same, so every one can see how his parti cular township stands, and those intereated in seeing their town JAPANEttOIL ITS 4 9CALJ MfOfCINff tic All. A person who knows he is not going to be able to cooperate this year Is requested to fill out ? work sheet for his farm iust as though he were going to cooper ate, for the trend in agriculture in the United States In the major ity of the farming classes Is for some form of control and adjust ment. Therefore it will be neces sary for each and every farmer to file a work sheet, so at some future date, should a law be pass ed controlling the number of pounds of crops that can be sold In respective counties, there will be on file In the County Office, a record of each person's crop, and| we will know the exact number | of acres planted In the County in the year 193C, which will In turn give the County a better claim for asking for proper ad justments for the County In ord er that thej In turn may do Justice to each and every farmer in the County.
