Cone, who is in charge of the ruralrehabilita tion, farm debt adjustment and tenant) loan programs in Franklin and Nash Counties, as follows: Who may apply for Tenant Purchase Loans? ? United States citizens who are farm tenants (not owners), share-croppers, farm laborers, or others who ob tain or recently have obtained most of their income from farm ing. Preference will be given to mar ried persons or persons with de pendent families; to persons able to make a down payment; or to persons who own livestock and equipment necessary to carry on farming operations. No loans will be made to persons who can ob tain an adequate loan for the pur chase of a farm from other sources at reasonable terms. How should loan applications be made ? If yon are in a county . designated as one in which loans are to be made thia year, obtain an application blank from the County Rehabilitation Supervisor who serves your county. Fill it out carefully and return it to him, either personally or by mail. It usually is advisable to call at his office and talk the matter over with him or bis assistant. If you do not know the Supervisor's ad dress, it may be obtained from your County Agricultural Agent. If my county is not selected for loans, may I apply in another county? ? No. Because of the lim ited funds available, application must be restricted to residents of the 300 selected counties. How will persons who will re ceive loans be selected from the large number who may apply? ? Congress has provided that coun ty committees of three farmers shall certify which applicants by reason of character, ability, and experience are likely successfully to carry out thi Undertaking re quired under a loan to purchase a farm. It is recognized that lim itations of funds will make it possible to grant loans to only a limited number of worthy and deserving applicants this year, j What kind of farms can be pur chased? ? A family-sized farm which can in general be operated with the labor available in the family. It should be large enough to provide a living for the bor rower and his family and enable him to retire the loan for the pur chase of his farm. mow will the farms be select ed? ? Applicants who will receive loans will be given a wide choice in selecting the farms they want to buy. The price of the property, however, must be in keeping with its value, as determined by the county committee and the FSA. Preference will be given tofarms needing a minimum outlay for re pairs and improvements. What help will FSA give the applicants who received a loan? ? The Farm Security Administra tion will assist applicants who re ceive loans in developing sound farm and home management plans, preparing operating bud gets, and maintaining business like records. Will loans be large enough to cover building repairs and other farm improvements? ? Yes, to a limited extent. Can I get a loan to finish pay ing for the farm I am now buy ing? ? No. Farm owners are not eligible, and refinancing loans will not be made. Must I have a farm selected be fore I apply? ? No. It is usually advisable to tilk wit-h the County Supervisor and the County Com mittee before choosing a farm. What are the terms of the loans? ? Loans are made for a 40-year period at 3 per cent in terest. How large will the annual pay ments be? ? Annual payments of 4.3 per cent of the sum borrowed will cover both interest and prin cipal. May I pay off the entire loan in less than 40 years? ? Yes. The Act provides that after five years payment in full may be made at any time. How will t'he loans be secured? ? By a first mortgage or deed of trust on the farm purchased. The borrower must agree to pay taxes and insurance on the farm build ings, to keep the farm in repair, and prevent waste and exhaustion ot the land. Timely Farm Questions Answered at State College QUESTION: How many pigs can be turned into a lot where steers are being fattened? ANSWER: This depends upon the form in which the concentrate is fed and the age of the steers For two-year old animals from one to three pigs should follow each steer when snapped corn is fed; one to two pigs when husked , ear corn is fed; one pig per steer* when shelled corn is used, and one pig to each two or three steers when tbe corn is crushed or' ground. With steers that are less than two years old. the number of pigs would be reduced. In addi tion to i4e feed picked up in the lot, the pigs should be given an animal protein supplement and minerals. j QUESTION: What is the best time to sow seeds in coldframes or hotbeds for the early spring garden? ANSWER: The best time to; sow seeds will depend upon the time the plants are wanted in the 1 field and also upon the section. Hardy crops such as cabbages and lettuce are usually transplanted to ttoe field is early as January 15 in the eastern part of tbe State. In the mountain sections, these hardy crops are started in the hot beds or coldframes about- January 1 to 15. For a very early crop, such tender vegetables as toma toes and peppers should be started from 8 to 10 weeks before it is safe to set them in the field and , for tbe main summer crops the seed should \>4 sown from ttoree to four weeks before danger of frost is over. QUESTION: Should oyster shell be kept before the laying hens at all times? ANSWER: This mineral may be substituted with ground limestone but one or the other should be i accessible to t-he laying flock all the time. The mineral content of the hen's body is nearly four per cent and the mineral content of the egg is eleven percent so it is necessary that tie birds have cer tain mineral elements for growth and repair of the body. Other necessary minerals are bone meal and salt. These elements supply calcium, phosphorous, sodium and chlorine and the oyster shell or ground limestone supplies addi j tional calcium.
