Forestry
i
I am handing you copy of a let
ter trom Dr. R. W. Graeber, Ex
tension Forester, State College
Station, Raleigh, North Carolina,
which contains important informa
tion as to the planting of trees by
farmers, and credits allowed by
the Agricultural Adjustment pro
gram on that account.
It seems to me that this is a
very unusual opportunity for the
farmers and many of them are not
taking advantage of it. I suggest
that they take the matter up with
Dr. Graeber with a view to taking
advantage of the unusual proposi
tion. We can cultivate forests Just
as we can cultivate cotton and to
bacco, and cultivated forests are
much better than wild forests. A
prudent man might lay off a suf
ficient number of acres to be plan
ted in certain trees with assurance
that in due time the tree crop
frould provide abundantly for the
education of his children.
The letter is as follows:
"May 22nd, 1939
Hon. Josiah W Bailey,
United States Senate,
^Washington, D. C.
Dear Senator Bailey:
I am sending you information
in regard to the provisions made
for furnishing trees to landowners
in North Carolina.
The North Carolina Department
of Conservation and Development i
in cooperation with the Federal
Government is operating two for
est tree nurseries for the purpose
of growing tree seedlings to be j
distributed to farmers and other j
landowners throughout :te State '
for reforestation, the reclaiming
of eroding land, and establishing
windbreaks. (No trees gTOwn in j
these nurseries can be sold for or- j
namental purposes.) The usual
price of these seedlings is $2.00
per thousand at the nursery, or
$2.25 per thousand delivered by
parcel post or express. Certain
species of trees such as white pine,
red and Norway spruce, etc..
which require two or more years
in the nursery, are a little higher, j
usually around $3 00 per thous
and, at the nursery, or $3.25 de- '
livered. lr*
The Forestry Extension Office j
at State College cooperates with
the State Division of Forestry in
the distribution of these tree seed
lings, taking applications from
farmers through our County
Agents, and then giving demon
strations in the planting of these
trees. The planting season begins
Novmber 15 and runs through
March 15 in most parts of this
State, and up to April 1 in die
mountain section.
Usually 1,000 trees are planted
per acre, this requiring a spacing
?f 6 x 7 feet.
If you are interested in the
planting of forest trees in the
State of North Carolina, we wilj.
be glad to cooperate with you and
we will send- you a price list and
other information in regard to
making application for trees early
this fall.
The State of Virginia is doing
the same thing in regard to the
growing of trees and distributing
them to the people of that State.
In each case it is through and with
the cooperation of the Federal
Government.
You also asked me to write you
In regard to the coopreationof the
Federal Government in regard to
the AAA Soil Conservation Pro
gram. In this connection I will say
that both North Carolina and Vir
ginia, which are included in the
East Central Region of the appli
cation of the agricultural adjust
ment program, give farmers credit '
on what is known as their soil
building goal for the following
forestry practices:
1. For planting forest trees on
crop land, they are allowed 5
credits per acre
2. For making timber stand
improvement cuttings in now ex
isting woodland, 2 credits per acre
1? allowed.
In the administration of the ag
ricultural adjustment program,
certain payments are set up to be
earned by the farmer who'cooper
ates in this program. However,
before he can secure these pay
ments, it is necessary for him to
carry out a certain number of
units of soil building practices. If

Dr. Clarence Poe, Editor of the

"I believe the $5,000,000 a year

marketing farm products will ac
complish ten times as much good
for farmers and public at large as
any Congressional appropria

The Bill at the present time is
